Avg Historical Daily Average

The month of May is the last chance before summer to visit Edinburgh without dealing with the large crowds associated with the next few months. Though, there are many visitors who find that the temperatures during this time of the year are just right and that now is the perfect time to visit the region. In fact, the pleasant weather now makes the city one of the best places in the country to visit.

One of the biggest changes in the weather is associated with the average water temperatures. These temperatures continue to increase this month and now average 10°C (50°F). While this might still be too cool to enjoy, with the region getting an average of 7 hours of sunshine per day, this can be a great time of the year to enjoy the sand.

Temperatures on land are also continuing to climb as the summer months are just around the corner. On average, the daily temperature is a pleasant 10°C (50°F). In fact, a light jacket is all that is needed during the afternoon hours which now stand at an average of 14°C (57°F). Mornings, however, will still be on the cool side, but by now temperatures are no longer flirting with the freezing mark. Temperatures will fall to an average overnight now of 6°C (43°F). As a result, slightly heavier sweaters and jackets are needed first thing in the day. It might be a good idea to dress in layers when exploring the city and check the extended forecast before leaving home.

Rainfall amounts will also be slightly higher this month than the previous one. Overall, the city will receive an average of 50mm of precipitation over a period of 21 days. Again, most of the rain continues to be light and fall as a shower rather than hard downpours.

Where to Stay

One of the best hotels in the city combines classic architecture and contemporary design. The Apex Waterloo Palace Hotel offers personalised service and is the perfect place for business travelers and those in town in May for pleasure. Guests will enjoy fine dining on the premises as well as an indoor pool, spa and state-of-the-art gym. All rooms come with a flatscreen TV and free WiFi.

Within an easy reach of both the centre of the city and the local airport, the Dakota Edinburgh is luxury just outside the city. Each of the rooms has a contemporary feel and offers deep beds with luxury linens, flatscreen TVs, and free WiFi to make you feel right at home. Guests can also take advantage of the onsite bar and restaurant to wrap up a day of shopping or business.

Hit the Beach

With the weather finally beginning to warm, now is a time that visitors can head back to the beach. The water may still be too cold for some, but a wetsuit can keep you warm for a short amount of time. One of the best nearby beaches is Cramond. Located just a short ride from the city, May is a good time to go and explore this beach. If you time it just right, you'll be able to walk across the low tide to Cramond Island. Just be sure you know when the tide will be changing, as you don't want to get stranded off shore.

Restaurants and Nightlife

One of the hottest and best restaurants in Edinburgh is Navadhayna. Known for its modern Indian dining, this award-winning restaurant is home to Michelin-starred chefs. Be prepared for your taste buds to take a trip representing all of India. Reservations are highly recommended.

If you are looking for a rustic and relaxed atmosphere, look no further than Pickles. Known for its Scottish cheese plate served with chutneys and pickles, you can't go wrong with the food or the wide selection of drinks. This is the ideal space to wind down in at the end of a long day.

If you are looking for one of the best bars and restaurants for an early or late evening cocktail look no further than the Whiski Bar and Restaurant. This award-winning pub is located along the Royal Mile and his home to not only over 300 malt whiskeys, but also a large selection of wines, beer and cocktails. Come in early or stay late and also enjoy the live music on hand seven nights a week.

Things to Do

One cannot go to Edinburgh and not visit Edinburgh Castle. Arguably, one of the most important historical sites in all of Europe, tours are available on a daily basis and there is plenty for the whole family to explore. Standing on the plug of an extinct volcano, the castle dominates the skyline of the city. Today, visitors have the opportunity to examine the crown jewels as well as explore the great hall and the royal palace.

Explore history like you never have before with a tour at Real Mary King's Close. A one-hour tour will take you through a series of underground streets. Learn more about the secret history of the region through a series of tours as guides take you back to a time long ago. This is a great way to spend a day in May and avoid some of the 50mm of precipitation expected to fall in the month.
