Autumn in Edinburgh really only consists of two months; September and October. As a result, temperatures fall off quickly during this month and visitors need to be prepared for cold blasts of air especially toward the end of the time period. As a result, it is best to have clothes that can be layered if more warmth is needed. However, if you don't mind a little chill, now is a good time to get a good rate for both airfare and hotel rooms.

This is also the wettest time of the year for the city. On average, the region receives 80mm of precipitation throughout the month. The good news is while temperatures are getting cold, the air is still well above freezing so there is little to no chance of experiencing frozen precipitation over your holiday. On the other hand, rain is expected on 23 of the 31 days of the month so rain gear is a necessity no matter what time of the month you choose to travel.

Temperatures continue their fall as the average high for this time of the year is 13°C (55°F). The average overnight low will see temperatures fall to 7°C (45°F) by first thing in the morning. This is definitely cold enough to warrant a heavy jacket, sweater, hat and gloves when packing for your holiday. Overall, the average daily temperature is just 10°C (50°F).

Visitors will not get a chance to experience a lot of sun as the region will only average 5 hours of sunshine per day during the month. The prime beach season has passed as water temperatures continue to fall. During the month, the average water temperature is down to 13°C (55°F). Some may choose to enjoy the water, but the beaches themselves may be too cold to relax on.

Where to Stay

Edinburgh has no shortage of high-end hotels and one of the best is the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh The Caledonian. Built in 1903, the hotel itself is located on Princes Street and offers stunning views of Edinburgh Castle from the vast majority of its rooms. Be sure to try the onsite restaurant that is manned by Michelin starred chefs. Guests may also take advantage of a world-class spa, bar, fitness center, pool, steam room and sauna. Each of the 68 rooms features flatscreen TVs, free WiFi, bathrobes, slippers and much more.

Named Edinburgh Hotel of the Year 2014 at the Scottish Hotel Awards, The Roxburghe is one that shouldn't be missed if you are looking for luxury. This four-star hotel is located in the middle of the city center and offers complementary WiFi, a spa, dining and more. Choose one of 199 rooms each offering some of the original charm of the building as well as all the amenities of home.

What has been everything from a poorhouse to an asylum is now one of the best hotels in Edinburgh and the perfect spot for an October holiday. The Hotel du Vin & Bistro offers just 47 bedrooms, but each one is luxuriously appointed with robes and a monsoon rain shower. Be sure to head downstairs and check out the unique bar and bistro located on the ground floor.

Hit the Beach

During October, water temperatures have cooled to 13°C (55°F) and now is one of the last times to hit the beach before the weather gets too bad. If you do find a nice day, one of the best local beaches is Seacliff. Easily accessed for a small fee, this is a great spot to escape some of the crowds of the other beaches. Be sure to pack a lunch for a picnic among a beautiful backdrop or you can go on a horse ride thanks to nearby stables.

Restaurants and Nightlife

For some of the finest dining in Edinburgh, be sure to visit the Castle Terrace Restaurant. This Michelin starred restaurant was completely refurbished in early 2016 and offers a culinary experience with flair on a modern menu. Located underneath Edinburgh Castle, guests experience modern British cuisine like they never have before.

For a great cup of coffee, be sure to head over to The Caffeine Drip.  This rustic hideaway offers not only a great cup of coffee to warm up with, but also a wide selection of breakfast dishes and baked goods. Feel free to sit and stay awhile in this warm, inviting atmosphere.

If you are on the hunt for live music, Finnegan's Wake has all you can ask for. With a large dance floor as well as plenty of televisions in order to catch the latest sport, this is a great pub to spend some time in while making friends from all over the world.

Things to Do

With the weather turning much colder in October, now may be a good time to see the city from the Edinburgh tour buses. Here, visitors are able to choose from several different guided tours to learn more about Edinburgh's rich history and sites. Most tours take about one hour and are the perfect way to see the city if you are only in town for a short amount of time.

It's not all about Whiskey in Edinburgh, one of the more popular spirits in the UK is gin and there is no better place to try some than the Edinburgh Gin Distillery. Visitors get a chance to examine two of the stills while learning some of the secrets to making a delicious spirit. Of course, visitors won't go home thirsty as each tour includes a tasting at the end.
