August is the last month of summer and still one of the hottest months of the year. As a result, this continues to be one of the prime months for holidays and for high prices. With the warm weather and annual Edinburgh festival on this month, if you are looking to stay on a budget, you may want to consider visiting the city another time of the year. This is also the last month before temperatures begin to cool off rapidly as autumn sets in during the month of September.

However, if you are a fan of the beach, now is the time to visit. While you might have to deal with crowds, the water temperature is the warmest it will be all year with an average of 15°C (59°F). While this may be on the cold side for some people, it is manageable for those with a wetsuit or who only spend a short amount of time in the waters. Additionally, the beaches are the perfect place to get some sun as the region experiences a whopping 10 hours of sunshine each day during this time of year.

Even though temperatures are warmer now than at any other point, other than the prior month, visitors will still need to pack some long sleeves and light jackets. The average afternoon high for this time of the year is a mild 19°C (66°F). However, the early mornings will still feel cool with an average overnight low falling to 11°C (52°F). Overall, the average daily temperature is 15°C (59°F).

The good news is that this is also a slightly drier month for the region. While the region still sees an average of 21 days with measurable rainfall, the average overall amount is down from the previous two months. On average, 50mm of precipitation is expected throughout the 31-day period. As a result, packing an umbrella or raincoat is still a good idea.
