Forecast
Avg Historical Daily Average

April can be one of the best times of the year to visit Edinburgh with the weather slowly warming and most of the large crowds still at home. By this point in the year, most of the restaurants and sites that closed for the winter months will be reopening to ready themselves for the crowds of summer. If you don't mind a few chilly spells, this can be a great time to explore the city without having to deal with the hoards that come just a few weeks later.

Overall, the average daily temperature continues to climb and now stands at 7°C (45°F) for the month. While a heavy jacket is still needed first thing in the morning, the afternoons are much more pleasant. In fact, the average afternoon high for this time of the year is now 11°C (52°F). However, it is still near freezing by first thing in the morning when the average overnight low falls to a cold 3°C (37°F). It will be important to consult an extended forecast before leaving home to make sure that you have the right mix of medium and heavy weight clothes with you.

Of course, it is also still a good idea to pack either a raincoat or an umbrella even though this is the driest month of the year. Throughout the 30 days of the month, an average of 40mm of precipitation is expected to fall over a period of 22 days. Even though much of the rain is light in nature, you don't want to risk being both wet and cold. Despite the fact that overnight lows are just a few degrees above the freezing mark, there is little chance of snow at this time of the year.

The good news is that there can be plenty of sun. On average, the region gets 9 hours of sunshine per day during this time of year. Visitors may be able to find a warmer day and walk along a nearby beach, but the water is still on the cold side at an average of 8°C (46°F).
