June is the start of the peak summer weather in Djerba which means wall to wall sunshine and a lot of heat.

By the middle of June, average peak temperatures of 28°C are commonplace. Though, historically, the thermometer has reached up to 46°C back in 2003 at this time of the year.

And while the number of average daily sunshine hours does fall from an incredible 12 hours per day in May, there are still approximately 11 hours of sunshine every day throughout this month, and lots of time to enjoy the weather.

As with the best Mediterranean climates, long days of hot sun also come with a distinct lack of rain. The average rainfall for Djerba in June is just 10mm, with a few drops expected on no more than 2 days. However it is very common for no rain at all to fall throughout the entire summer months, which means the land can become barren and sometimes very scorched.

The warm weather also heats the sea very nicely in June. Average sea temperatures of 24°C may not be as warm as peak temperatures of 29°C in August. But it does ensure everyone wants to go for a dip.

Thankfully, the cool costal breeze is usually enough to keep peak temperatures comfortable, especially on the beaches. And the lack of rain means humidity levels are more acceptable when compared with the more humid May days. But don't expect the air to get chilly as the night draws in. Even in the dead of night average low temperatures are only likely to fall to 20°C making air conditioning important for those that need cool air.

Though still quieter than the peak months of July and August, June in Djerba is a very popular time. With long days of hot sun and warm nights, the climate is perfect for sitting outside in one of the many bars and restaurants on the island and reflecting on how beautiful life can be.

Where to Stay

The Sentido Djerba Beach is part of the Sentido chain of hotels which is a name synonymous with luxury and high quality service. And the Djerba Beach is no exception. Based directly on their own white sandy beach, this hotel offers 4 bars, 2 restaurants and a Moorish café to all of its guests, along with exquisite accommodation for families and couples alike. The authentic décor in the hotel itself works beautifully with the views outside. And with very helpful staff, fantastic pool facilities and a range of entertainment for all ages, one stay at Djerba Beach is never enough.

For a different kind of Djerbian experience, book a stay at Menzel El Kateb. This traditionally furnished guest house is a wonderful way to gain a taste of true Djerbian culture, all with the modern amenities required to make for a very comfortable stay. The atmosphere is very relaxing, the staff are truly your friends. But when the June heat gets too much, the modern onsite swimming pool is always ready to refresh.  Choose from luxury or more economical accommodation and have a truly authentic respite in Menzel El Kateb.

The staff at Dar Hamza are so accommodating, don't be surprised if you end up spending a lot of your time with them. Not only do Brahim and Serge run this high quality guest house, they also offer tours of the island and trips to the local viewpoints to make sure you get the most from your stay. Choose an apartment on a higher level for the best views and the more private accommodation. But with plenty of shared space and a wonderful pool area, you're sure to make lifelong friends.

Things to Do

If you want to get up close with the crocs, then Djerba Explore is the place to go. Plan your trip around one of the feeding days at the farm and you may even get involved in giving these ferocious animals their dinner. You can then see just how powerful they are. Even if you go on a non-feeding day, the guides will give you a real insight into these wild animals and their habits. And after all that time with the crocs there is still a beautiful café to enjoy and an extensive museum that takes you on a wonderful journey through the history of Djerba.

With its traditional white-washed houses and the very busy market square, Houmt Souk is a fantastic place to spend a day in Djerba. Wonder through the narrow streets and alleys to discover the mass of craft shops and souvenir vendors that line them. Discover the incredible architecture across the village including the wonderful mosques and funduqs that are very popular in this region. Arrive early in the morning and take the 25 minute walk to the fishing port. Not only can you pick up some very fresh food but the port is about its business first thing in the day. Alternatively, sit outside one of the many authentic cafes and restaurants to watch the world go by. With a Museum of Popular Arts illustrating all the most important Djerbian traditions, it is a wonderful place to explore.

Hit the Beach

Plage Municipale is one of the few public beaches on Djerba, and is a great place to go to if you want to get away from the commercial aspect of hotel beaches. The soft sand offers the opportunity to sunbathe and get to know the locals. But with a variety of activities on the beach, you will never get bored. This is a traditional local's beach, so there are no parasols for hire or sunbeds to sit on. Instead it's a towel on the soft sand and lots of fun for everyone.

Everyone is welcome at Hotel Fiesta Beach whether you are staying at the Hotel Fiesta or not. There are plenty of sunbeds and parasols for everyone and a variety of activities to keep all ages entertained. From camel rides to water sports and even the odd game of bowls. This is a beach which is full of activity, so just make sure you don't miss out.

Restaurants and Nightlife

If you fancy a steak, head down to Texas City Steakhouse for something a little more traditional. But once you are in, don't be surprised if you stay all night. Situated in the middle of Zone Touristique, Texas City is also a nightclub where the music pumps until the early hours of the morning.  This is not the place for a quiet night out for a couple. But when you want a quick meal and then a dance until dawn, the drinks are cool, the DJ is very friendly and the atmosphere is perfect for those that want to party.

There is an altogether different vibe at Salsa Disco Djerba. With plenty of live music, traditional food and cold drinks, this is the place to come when you want a touch of Djerbian nightlife, right in the middle of Midoun. Regular guest DJ's and speciality nights mean this place is buzzing all year round. But in the warmth of the June air things really start to heat up. With a mix of locals and tourists having fun, a night at Salsa Disco Djerba is not to be missed.

When you just want to chill, the smell of freshly ground coffee coming out of the White Café is bound to entice you in. The stunning white interior ensures the café always feels very fresh and accommodating. And the odours from the kitchen are something you can enjoy at any time of the day. Order some of that delicious coffee and why not take a slice of one of their magnificent pies to go with it. Or snuggle down in the soft cosy sofas with a fruit water pipe to end the evening. All while enjoying the view over the sea.
