Deauville sits on the northeast coast of France on the British channel. It receives all four seasons and moderate rainfall year round. Like all of eastern France, Deauville has a temperate maritime climate in which the climate and weather conditions from day to day are largely dictated by the currents and winds of the Atlantic Ocean. Temperatures are generally mild, avoiding extremes, and the weather in general is prone to fickleness. Deauville is a forty minute drive from the port city of Le Havre.
Summer, from June till September, is warm and sunny with low rainfall. The average high temperature reaches 18°C in June, peaks at 21°C in August and gets back down to 19°C in September. It can get into the mid 20s on sunny days, but it is usually quite mild especially when the sea wind blows. It cools off at night to the mid teens. The water temperature is very cool, peaking at 17°C in August and September, but plenty of people still find the courage to swim in the ocean. Sunshine levels are best early in summer with an average of eight hours of sunshine per day. Light showers are quite frequent, but much less so than at any other time of year.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Autumn, in October and November, cools down quickly. Damp, grey weather is common. The average high temperature drops to 15°C in October and 11°C in November, while the average low falls to 11°C and 7°C respectively. While the start of the season does see some warm weather, it does become chilly early on. Rainfall increases (though if youâre from the UK you wonât notice a difference) and light showers fall on over half of the days in each month. Water temperature drops to 13°C in November and sunshine reduces to quite gloomy levels.
Winter, from December till February, is cool but rarely extremely cold and rather wet. The average high temperature sits around 7°C for most of the season and the average low gets down to 4°C. Frosts are uncommon so close to the sea and snow is highly unlikely. Because of the wind it can feel very cold, so while subzero temperatures rarely occur you should still come prepared for icy temperatures. Sunshine levels sit around two or three hours per day and clouds dominate the sky for much of the season, usually rainclouds that bring frequent showers.
Spring, from March till May, slowly warms up and soon becomes pleasantly bright and sunny. The average high temperature reaches 10°C in March, 12°C in April and 16°C in May. It remains very chilly at night, only getting up to 10°C in May. Late spring is very pleasant and you might even see some t-shirt weather. Sunshine levels jump up in April to an average of six hours per day, and again in May to seven. Rainfall remains quite frequent but becomes slightly lighter and the water temperature takes its time heating up â" you probably wonât fancy a dip as even in May it is still only 11°C.
