What's the weather like in Costa Teguise in May

Costa Teguise, Spain, is ideally situated on the east coast of Lanzarote, just a short jaunt from the UK. The town has been specifically designed to cater to all holiday requirements, with plenty of activities and attractions to entertain couples and families for a full two weeks, and a lively nightlife that makes is suitable even for short weekend getaways to escape the British weather.

Temperature

May brings the transition from spring to summer in Costa Teguise, with the town experiencing a boost in beautiful weather. Temperatures range from around 16°C to 24°C, and sea temperatures rise up to around 16°C on average.

Rain

Precipitation levels remain a minimal 2mm spread across just two days, and should continue at this low rate until the winter starts to approach. Precipitation is very low during May, the probability that some form of precipitation will be observed is only 11% at the start of the month and around May 31st only 6% likely.

The hotel overlooks El Jablillo beach and offers rooms with private kitchen and bathroom areas that sleep up to three guests. The property is geared up to cater both to families and couples, and includes a range of onsite activities such as kid's clubs, massages, and mini golf, amongst a wide range of sports.

If you're looking for somewhere more affordable you may be interested in the staying at Apartamentos Neptuno. This oceanfront hotel offers bright, comfortable apartments and rooms in Costa Teguise. The complex also offers a restaurant, but if you would rather get out in the evenings there are numerous bars and restaurants within close proximity.

The Hotel Club Siroco is an adults only self-catering apartment complex located just a couple of minutes walk away from Cucharas Beach. Every apartment comes with an open-plan living room, satellite TV and kitchen area which features a hob, microwave and coffee machine.

The Sands Beach Resort is a set of four-star apartments located on the beachfront of Costa Teguise. This stunning resort features six plazas with their own swimming and paddling pools, as well as direct access to the beach. On site you will also find two restaurants, a pool bar and gym. 

 

Costa Teguise Beach for May

Las Cucharas Beach is the main beach in Costa Teguise. This 640m long beach offers clean golden sand, warm turquoise waters and a perfect climate during May! This is also a popular spot for windsurfers due to the slightly stronger winds in this corner of the island. There are a number of amenities and facilities in the area including sun loungers, parasols, restaurants, cafes, convenience stores and more.

Famara Beach is another popular spot at this time of year as the temperatures continue to rise towards the summer months. This golden sand beach is more than 6km wide, making it the longest beach on the island. The only downside is that it can get very windy at this time of year, making it a haven for windsurfers and a welcome relief if the sun gets too intense, although swimming is very dangerous at this beach as the currents can be very strong.

Bars and Restaurants

For those craving the tastes of home, The Red Lion bar is a good choice. The British owned pub and cafe shows the latest matches and horse racing from the UK, and serves up British favourites including Nescafe, Strongbow, and John Smith's. Table games, dartboards, and free Wi-Fi are also available here. During the warmer days, patrons can enjoy the view from the outdoor terrace seating.

Jesters Bar is one of the most well known, and well visited, bars in the town. This English-run establishment is especially popular during the early hours, as it's one of the only bars in Costa Teguise that remains open until 4 am. There's a nightly DJ and dance floor, although for those looking for a quieter time, there's also a relaxed area with TVs showing British sporting events. As well as beers, ciders, wines, and cocktails, this place is also known for its range of shots, including the unique 'Jester Cake'.

La Tabla is an authentic little Spanish tapas bar that serves all the classic favourites such as chorizo, patatas bravas, paellas and Spanish tortilla. The restaurant also features an outdoor terrace which is the best place to sit out on a warm evening.

Another option worth a try is Tekkers Family Bar & Restaurant. This place mainly specialises in British cuisine such as fish and chips or a good old Sunday roast! On certain evenings of the week there is also live music and family entertainment.

Things to do in Costa Teguise in May

The Lanzarote Aquarium is located in Costa Teguise, and is a great day out for both kids and adults. The aquarium is the largest of its kind in the Canary Islands, with over a million litres of water used to fill the 33 different tanks homing clown fish and hermit crabs amongst many other species of sea life. The highlights are the underwater walkthrough tunnel, and the three touch tanks, where children can feel and hold some of the creatures such as starfish and sea cucumbers.

This time of year is perfect to go scuba diving as the sea temperature is a positively warm 19°C. The Daivoon Diving Center offers diving lessons to all abilities in a safe and welcoming environment. You are more than likely to come across a vast array of different marine species from Angel Sharks to Atlantic Rays!

Jameos del Agua is a set of volcanic caves located in Arrecife. The word 'Jameo' refers to a volcanic cave with a collapsed roof. You will also find an underground salt-water lagoon here named Jameo Chico, which is home to a rare species of crab named 'Blind Albino'. The cave also features a recently re-opened auditorium which sits up to 600 people. Due to the excellent acoustics a number of concerts are held at this unique venue.

To make the most of Costa Teguise before the schools break up why not go for a hike or stroll around the local area. The Lanzarote Active Club offers unique hiking excursions around the island of Lanzarote where you can learn about local flora and fauna, as well as the island's interesting volcanic history. As well as guided walks Lanzarote Active Club offers boat excursions, bird watching trips and wine and gastronomy experiences.

Dates for the diary

May 1st marks Labour Day across the Canary Islands and Spain. Spaniards and Canarians take the day off work and spend the day relaxing with friends or family. Because of this, most businesses will be closed but popular tourist attractions and restaurants are likely to still be open.

The Volcano Triathlon is due to take place on May 2nd in 2015. This endurance race is open to people of all ages and includes a 1.5k swim, 40k bike ride and a final 10k run! The route will pass Famara, Caleta de Caballo and finish at the Club La Santa Stadium.

Every May 3rd Lanzarote celebrates Dia de la Cruz "Day of the Cross." Events are held across the island involving authentic Canary Island costumes, decorated crosses, flower displays and more. On this day it is also traditional to climb the Montana Blanca to visit the cross at the top of the mountain.

IRONMAN Lanzarote is considered to be one of the toughest Ironman events in the world. The race starts off with a swim taking place at Playa Grande and Puerto del Carmen. The race then goes onto a challenging bike course with over 2551m of hills and strong winds to combat. Last but not least, the final run consists of three laps passing Puerto del Carmen once again. The race is set to take place on May 23rd.

May 30th marks a special day in the Canary Islands. This day is Dia de las Canarias "Day of the Canary Islands" which is celebrated as a public holiday across all of the Canaries and Spain. The day also marks the anniversary of the Canary Islands Parliament's first session in 1983.
