What's the weather like in Costa Teguise in March

Costa Teguise, Spain, is a coastal resort on the island of Lanzarote, part of the Canary Islands chain to the west of Northern Africa. Although the town was purpose built for tourism in the 1980s, one aspect of the resort that is natural is the beaches. In fact, all five of Costa Teguise's stunning stretches of sand have largely remained untouched by developers.

Temperature

As spring approaches, the weather in Costa Teguise starts to vary from the stable conditions during the winter, and temperatures begin to rise and rainfall begins to drop. Lows average around 15°C, while highs can reach the mid 20s, often peaking at around 23°C. Rainfall drops to around 12 mm over the month, as it does in Puerto del Carmen, although sea temperatures remain roughly the same at 18°C on average.

Daylight and Sunshine Hours

The length of day is also starting to gradually increase in March. From the start to the end of the month the length of day increases by approximately 53 minutes. Furthermore, the shortest day of the month is March 1st with 11:35 hours of daylight whilst the longest day is March 31st with 12:27 hours of daylight. The amount of sunshine hours have also increased by one hour compared to February from nine hours per day to 10.

Throughout this month the most common forms of precipitation are drizzle, moderate rain and light rain. Overall, you definitely don't have to worry about the rain or cloud cover affecting your holiday during March.

At this time of year the humidity levels tend to be slightly lower. During March the relative humidity levels typically fluctuate between a mildly humid 52% and a very humid 89%. On average, the air is driest around March 14th, at which time the relative humidity drops below a mildly humid 61% three days out of four.

Wind

Furthermore, during March the typical wind speeds vary from 5mph to 20mph, which is considered as a light to fresh breeze, rarely exceeding a strong breeze of 28mph. The highest average wind speed of 13mph usually occurs around March 23rd, when the average daily maximum wind speed is 20mph. At this time of year the wind is most often coming from the north followed by the northeast.

Costa Teguise Beach for March

Esenada de la Caleta Beach can be found close to Arrecife and the port area of Marmoles. This beach is rather popular due to its calm clear waters and fine white sand, however it can get rather windy at certain times of the day. The beach also features unique lava stones also known as 'picon.'

Playa Bastian Beach is located in a semi-developed zone of the resort and is over 375m long, meaning there's plenty of space for everyone, however, this time of year does tend to be quieter in comparison to the summer months. There are also a number of amenities and facilities available at this beach such as sun loungers, parasols and hammocks. There is also a nearby parking area if you have hired a car for the duration of your stay as well as a local bus route to and from the beach.

Famara Beach is more than 6km wide, making it the longest beach in Lanzarote. The beach offers fine golden sand, however, it can get very windy at this time of year, making it a haven for windsurfers. Swimming is very dangerous at this beach, but it is an excellent spot for expert surfers and windsurfers.

Bars and Restaurants

If you're a fan of Mediterranean food head to the highly popular Portobello Restaurante Italiano in Costa Teguise. This place serves delicious homemade pizza, pasta, steaks, salads and more, which will please even the fussiest eater!

On the other hand, if you prefer a good old Indian curry you must try the Masala Lounge. This eatery serves all the classics from Madras to Shashlik kebab! Plus, they also serve a great array of sweet treats such as mouthwatering chocolate cake with fresh cream.

Open nightly from 8pm, Coyote Disco is one of the few clubs in Costa Teguise. There's a resident DJ each and every night, although for a wild time, visit on a Friday for the weekly foam party. The music here suits all tastes, ranging from Latin music and 80s and 90s classics to garage, dance, and house. The Lively Lady Show Bar is a comedy bar show that has been going strong for a number of years in Costa Teguise. The shows feature comedy mime, live music and audience participation to get everyone involved. The bar offers a friendly and intimate atmosphere that is open to the whole family!

Things to do in Costa Teguise in March

Although the waters haven't yet heated up in Costa Teguise, March is a great time for taking a dive, as it's one of the last opportunities to see angel sharks that come to the area during the winter. Calipso Diving have a school in the heart of the town and offer cave diving, wreck diving, and reef diving all over the island. Caves and lava tubes are common sights due to the island's volcanic past, and seahorses, giant tuna, and dolphins can usually be seen all year round.

However, if you're in need of a little retail therapy make sure to head to Lanzarote's capital Arrecife, which is just a 15 minute drive from Costa Teguise. The city is the principal commercial centre of the island and offers a large shopping street (Castillo y Leon) that features a wide array of shops selling renowned brands and local goods.

Lanzarote offers a wide array of natural attractions from lakes and lagoons to extinct volcanoes. The Timanfaya National Park boasts a jaw dropping stretch of volcanic wasteland which stretches over 51 square kilometers. The Montanas del Fuego "Fire Mountains" are said to have been created between 1730 and 1736 when more than 100 volcanoes rose up from beneath the ground and devastated this part of the island. There are a number of tour operators and providers on the island that offer excursions to this mesmerizing natural spot.

The Fundación César Manrique is a great way to spend an afternoon to learn about the local art culture on the island. The home of famed Spanish artist César Manrique is designed in the contemporary art style he was renowned for, and a selection of his most famous works can be seen in the adjoining gallery.

Dates for the diary

"Danza de los Diabletes" which translates into "Dance of the Little Devils" is a notable event celebrated every year in Teguise around the 1st of March. Along with this event there will be a carnival taking place with various parades and street musicians.

March is a relatively busy month in terms of events. Dia de San Jose (St. Joseph's Day) takes place on March 19th which celebrates the Feast of St. Joseph, who was husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Roman Catholic Church. To commemorate the day there will be many special services held in churches throughout the island of Lanzarote.

In 2015 Holy Week takes place from Palm Sunday on March 29th and lasts until Holy Saturday, which falls on April 4th. There will be range of religious festivities taking place throughout the island to celebrate the occasion.
