The Corfu Mare is an impressive looking hotel that often offers special room rates if you book in advance. The building was renovated in 2009 and looks stylish while still retaining a cosy atmosphere. Each one of its rooms and suites are equipped with satellite, A/C, mini-bar, safe, and furnished balcony or terrace. The hotel is about 1 mile outside the centre of Corfu Town but there are plenty of bars and restaurants just 150 metres away.
The tiny island of Mathraki nearby makes a great day trip. Just seven miles and 45 minutes off the coast of Corfu, you can easily take a boat out to enjoy the simple 2km beach. There are three restaurants and a few rooms and villas available for rent.
Corfu Beaches for May
The two kilometres Agios Georgios Pagon beach, located in the northwest of the island, is worth the drive out of Corfu Town. It somehow avoids the crowds even in peak season. You'll mostly see families on the sand or in one of the tavernas that dot the cliffs.
Bars and Restaurants
Khrysomalis is a local favourite known for its homestyle tzatziki, stuffed cabbage leaves and fresh artichokes in dill sauce. Famously, it was frequently patroned by the Durrells.
Alternately, To Tavernaki Tis Marinas, open from lunch to midnight, offers reasonably priced mains. Try the mousakas or grilled sardines. The cheerful staff and peaceful atmosphere is sure to bring you back for more.
Things to do in Corfu in May
On the 21st of May, the people of Corfu celebrate Enossis ton Eptanisson. This festival marks the anniversary of the Ionian Islands' Union with the Greek mainland and features a procession through the town, parades and brass bands.
Corfu has had a rich history and the place to go if you want to learn more about it is the Archaeological Museum, in the Garitsa quarter. This houses finds from the temple of Artemis as well as pieces excavated from the ancient city of Corfu. The museum is closed on Mondays.
As you would expect, there are several boat trips available from Corfu.
One of the popular trips is a Cruis to Paxos and Antipaxos islands. You'll sail through crystal clear waters, passed mysterious sea caves before reaching the tiny island of Paxos. There's also a fair chance that you'll see a pod of dolphins playing around the boat at some stage during the day.
