Saint Neophytos Monastery
March is a great time of year to go on outdoor adventures and morning outings. When visiting Coral Bay, be sure to appreciate the rich history of the area. Saint Neophytos Monastery and caves is easily accessible by both car and bus from Coral Bay. Saint Neophytos, or Neophytos the Recluse, lived from 1134 -1214. During his life, he fulfilled many roles including priest, hermit, and monk. He carved out the caves we are able to visit today and established the monastery. Please be quiet and respectful when visiting as Saint Neophytos Monastery is still a functioning today. The main church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. If you go, be prepared to spend several hours breaking the fresh air and tranquility of the ancient orthodox sanctuary.
Panagia Chrysopoltissa Church
Similarly, the Panagia Chrysopolitissa Church is another lovely landmark near Coral Bay. This church was built in the 13th century, the architecture of this building contributes to its fame.
Saint Paul's Pillar
Definitely recommended for art and architecture lovers, nearby is Saint Paul's Pillar. Saint Paul's Pillar is where, according to tradition, in 45 AD, Saint Paul was flogged before the conversion of the Roman Governor to Christianity. The church is renowned for its ancient floor mosaics, some of which are still intact. It's also mentionable that the church was built on the site of an early Byzantine basilica.
