What's the Weather Like in Copenhagen in June

June marks the beginning of summer season in Copenhagen, where tourism really begins to get underway. With lovely weather, warmer temperatures and the ability to finally hit the beach, this is one of the more popular times of the year to visit. As a result, hotel rooms fill up fast and the wait times will be a little bit longer at restaurants. However, visitors are assured that all the sites they would like to see are open to guests.

Sea Temperature and Sunshine Hours

Despite being home to some wonderful European beaches, they have been pretty much off limits up to now because of the cold water temperatures. However, that changes at this time of the year as both tourists and locals flock to the local waters. Water temperatures are still cold, but now warm enough to be enjoyed, at least for a short amount of time. Average water temperatures for the month are 15°C (59°F). Additionally, the area receives an average of 13 hours of sunshine per day, allowing for plenty of time to get some sun.

Temperature

Temperatures on land are also warmer with a daily average of 15°C (59°F). While this might be colder than other European cities for the same time frame, it can also be refreshing to get away from some of the oppressive heat which you'll find in other areas. The average afternoon high is a pleasant 19°C (66°F) while overnight lows will fall to 11°C (52°F). Visitors shouldn't leave their jackets at home, but any outer gear doesn't have to be as heavy as that needed just a few short months earlier.

Rain

One drawback to traveling to the city during this time of the year is the amount of rain. Summer brings some of the wettest months of the year. Typically, the city will average 60mm of precipitation for the month, falling over a period of 16 days.

Bars and Restaurants

Known as one of the best places to eat in Copenhagen, Restaurant Krebsegaarden is deserving of its reputation. With a menu that changes based on the current exhibition in Gallery Krebsen, there's always something new to try, and guests are encouraged to sample the extensive tasting menu. There's also a fine wine list alongside the dishes available.

Grams Laekkerier

If you're looking for a light lunch or an afternoon snack, Grams Laekkerier is an excellent choice. Known for its unbeatable sandwiches and coffee, this restaurant sits in the trendy Vesterbro neighbourhood behind Copenhagen Central Station and is a popular choice among locals and shoppers. Arrive early at lunchtime to avoid the queues.

Von Fressen

Another Vesterbro establishment which is worthy of its rave reviews is Von Fressen. Whether you're looking for somewhere to stop for a lunch or something a bit more substantial, you won't be disappointed by the options available on its extensive menu. There's a big emphasis on fresh ingredients and creative presentation, while there's also a good selection of beers, wines and spirit from the bar.

Kalaset

Those in search of a brunch spot should head to Kalaset, which serves classic dishes with generous portion sizes. Located near the Copenhagen lakes, this friendly establishment projects an intimate vibe with low lighting, candles at tables and cosy furnishings. They also cater well to vegetarian diners.

Things to do in Copenhagen in June

Copenhagen Zoo

With the weather becoming considerably warmer than that of previous months, June makes a fabulous time to enjoy the outdoor attractions Copenhagen has to offer. Families will love the Copenhagen Zoo, which is home to animals from all corners of the globe. Dating back to 1859, this immensely popular attraction has become part of city life and visitors are invited to watch the feeding times and training sessions.

Tivoli Gardens

Any trip to Copenhagen wouldn't be quite right without a visit to Tivoli Gardens, which is actually the second-oldest operating theme park in the world. Located in the middle of town, the gardens are surrounded by the Central Station and City Hall and have been thrilling visitors since 1843. There's something for everyone at this charming amusement park, which is home to one of the last remaining brakeman-operated rollercoasters in the world. If you're more of an adrenaline junkie, trade in the teacup rides for the Vertigo, which turns you upside down at 100 km/h.

SMK- The National Gallery of Denmark

Art lovers shouldn't pass up the opportunity to visit SMK- The National Gallery of Denmark, which houses the country's most comprehensive collection of art which spans over 7 centuries. This eminent museum hosts a number of events, art talks, exhibitions, concerts and workshops throughout the year, along with regular guided tours. The museum is particularly famous for its collection of Danish Golden Age art and its Henri Matisse collection. It's also worth noting that entry is free for Copenhagen Card holders.

Amager Strandpark

Head to the open expanses of Amager Strandpark if you're looking for somewhere to enjoy the warmer weather and long evenings away from the hubbub of central Copenhagen. A short subway journey from the city centre, this beach park is made up of a 2km-long artificial island which forms a lagoon with children's pools on one side, and a large sandy beach on the other. With its fine white sands, the beach offers excellent views of the windmill farms of the Oresund Strait and the impressive bridge linking the city to Sweden, one of the largest of its type in the world.

Torvehallerne

Copenhagen is a mecca for window-shoppers and deserves its reputation for being one of the most stylish cities in Europe. The city's main shopping thoroughfare, Stroeget, is reputed to be the longest shopping street in the world and is home to upscale department stores such as Illum and Magasin, along with a slew of other fashionable international brand stores. Head to Bredgade near the Amalienborg Palace for fine furniture and antiques, and be sure to visit the Torvehallerne market hall for gourmet goods and local produce.
