April is the last month of the prime tourism season in Colombo. After this month, monsoon season hits the area, with an increasingly high rainfall that sends the humidity levels soaring.

Things to do in Colombo in April

Colombo is a city steeped in history and culture and there is plenty to see and do whilst you are there.

For a spot of culture, the museums, art galleries and theatres are ikely to appeal to you. Or get an insight into the local culture and traditions by visiting one of the many religious places of worship in the area. There are a number of Hindu and Buddhist temples, as well as mosques.

The area boasts many significant historical sites too, with the evidence of the colonial rule apparent throughout the city.

In April, tourists will be delighted to attenbeaxd the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival. This is one of the largest events in the Sri Lankan calendar as  it signifies the end of the previous year and the beginning of a prosperous year. 

Usually, the festival is held either on the 13th or the 14th of April and most people close up shop to celebrate. 

During these days, the Sinhalese group of Sri Lankans will get together dressed in new clothes to partake in milk rice and traditional sweets. The clothes and sweets are specially made for the festival. 

This is perhaps one of the most social events in the city's calendar. Most of the children will get together to play traditional games, while most of the women will get together to sing and dance to entertain the masses. This is truly a festival you don't want to miss.
