Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, is situated in the Ciego de Ávila Province. This province stretches from the north coast to the south and is very diverse. To the north are Cayo Guillermo and the other islands that have been developed solely for tourism purposes, while the south is covered with dense mangrove forests and the growing of crops such as pineapple, sweet potato and banana.
October is Cayo Guillermo's wettest month of the year, with very heavy rainfall of around 182 mm on average. This doesn't deter travellers though, many of whom visit the resort to enjoy the high temperatures of 22 to 31 degrees Celsius; much warmer than a British autumn. Sea temperatures remain warm at 29 degrees, so water sports are still popular at this time of year.
In October, Cayo Guillermo welcomes the Jardines del Rey International Fishing Tournament. The event takes place at the popular fishing marina and is open to everyone; professional fishermen, leisure fishers and even spectators who simply want to watch the action. Fishermen can often be seen sailing 3 miles off the coastline to the Old Bahama Channel in order to catch the biggest and best fish. The annual event is designed to promote the resort as a top fishing destination in Cuba.
The marina is located on the road between Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco, so it's easy to access from hotels at either resort. La Bodeguita, located at the Sol Cayo Coco hotel, is a busy and lively Cuban cocktail bar offering all the old favourites, but specialising in Cuban and Caribbean inspired mixes. This semi-outdoor bar is adorned with wicker furniture for a relaxed and laid back atmosphere.
Also in Cayo Coco, the Krystal Laguna offers hotel accommodation for just £67 per night. The 4* complex offers both standard rooms and luxury villas. The hotel is typical of the other accommodations along the Jardines del Rey, offering a variety of activities, entertainments, bars and restaurants, and an all-inclusive aspect.
