The island of Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, is a part of the Jardines del Rey island chain, translating as 'Gardens of the King'. The purpose built tourist resort is situated amongst many of Cuba's finest national parks which are home to a variety of flora, fauna and animal species such as Desmarest's hutia which is native to Northern Cuba.
November is the true start of winter in Cayo Guillermo, when the cooler and drier weather arrives in Cuba. Temperatures drop by roughly 3 degrees Celsius from the summer months, bring heats between 20 and 29 degrees, and sea temperatures drop to a cooler yet still pleasant 27 degrees. There's a dramatic reduction in rainfall in November from the wetter summer, with around 86 mm on average.
One of the most popular tours from Cayo Guillermo is a speed boat tour through the famous Ciego de Ávila mangroves. The boats travel so quickly through the water that it gives the impression of flying. During the trip, the boats moor up on a jetty amongst the mangroves where passengers can choose to hang out overlooking the water, go for a swim or snorkel, or see the tree rats (just remember not to feed them, they're not as cute as they look!). All hotels in Cayo Guillermo can arrange this tour for guests.
Back in the heart of the resort, La Marina Restaurant at the Iberostar Daiquiri hotel is a popular dining spot. This themed restaurant offers up a true taste of Cuba, with a menu filled with dishes that originate from Cuba and the southern Caribbean islands. Spiced pork and Creole flavours are common, and it's one of the few eateries in Cayo Guillermo that focuses on its country's national foods.
The Meliá Buena Vista on the neighbouring island of Cayo Santa Maria is a great place for really enjoying the beautiful coastline of Cayo Guillermo. This 5* hotel complex is reserved for adults only, giving it a more intimate, relaxed and romantic atmosphere than some of the other hotels in the region. Rooms cost from £117 per night and an in room spa service is offered for relaxation and luxury.
