Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, is a small yet lively resort situated off the country's northern coastline. It is widely considered to be home to one of Cuba's best beaches, with white sands leading down to the crystal clear sea. Local fishermen can often be seen along the beach and at the marina on the road to neighbouring Cayo Coco; a similar resort to the east.

Cayo Guillermo experiences warm yet wet weather as the summer months approach. Temperatures are unlikely to drop below 21 degrees Celsius, even overnight, while daytime temperature frequently hit the 30 degree and above mark. Sea temperatures rise to around 27 degrees, and rainfall also increases significantly. Heavy rain of 168 mm is normal for this time of year.

On May 1st, Cuba celebrates the international holiday of May Day, with locals here particularly celebrating the changes implemented from the success of the Cuban Revolution. Celebrations are minimal in the tourist-focused Cayo Guillermo, so it's a good time to make a trip across to the mainland. The city of Morón is the first major area reached when accessing the mainland. Although most shops and restaurants will be closed, the city does hold celebrations and parades which are well worth watching.

Back in Cayo Guillermo, La Gondola Restaurant at the Iberostar Daiquiri hotel is a formal fine dining restaurant serving up the best in Italian cuisine. Due to the dress code, the crowd here tends to be older and quieter than in the more informal buffet or barbecue style eateries on the premises. It's considered to be one of the most romantic venues at the resort and doubles as a breakfast room in the mornings.

Just a quick taxi journey to the east will have travellers at the Meliá Cayo Coco. Rooms are slightly pricier than at other hotels, at around £120 per night all-inclusive, but this adult-only hotel offers a quiet and relaxed intimacy that other family resorts cannot. All rooms are housed in two storey bungalows and feature private balconies or terraces. The pool and private beach both boast a waiter service for the ultimate luxurious experience.
