The small and quiet Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, is an island in the Jardines del Rey chain in the Ciego de Ávila Province. It's a primarily tourist destination, with local Cubans visiting from the mainland, particularly Morón, for entertainment and relaxation. The hotels in the town are all-inclusive, with an array of daytime and evening activities, restaurants and bars.
Cayo Guillermo sees warm weather all year round, and March is no exception. In keeping with other nearby resorts such as Santa Maria, Cayo Guillermo experiences temperatures ranging from around 18 to 29 degrees Celsius, with sea temperatures a comfortable 25 degrees on average. Rainfall picks up a little from earlier in the year, with the resort seeing around 52 mm across the month.
Cayo Guillermo is a place of brilliant beaches, and beachfront horseback riding is available from all the hotels in the resort. The guided trek takes around one hour and costs £6. Groups are small and intimate, with around 5 or 6 riders on each tour. The trek is particularly relaxing, going at a slow pace so it's ideal for beginners or those with less riding confidence. Both adults and children are welcomed.
The Gregorio Restaurant at the Iberostar Daiquiri hotel is one of the most sophisticated eateries in Cayo Guillermo. Although all are welcomed, the formal atmosphere and strict dress code means there's fewer families and more couples, giving a romantic atmosphere. The restaurant serves up Mexican cuisine every evening, including spiced rice and meat dishes.
For spectacular views of the Cayo Guillermo coastline, consider staying in one of the many hotels on Cayo Ensenachos, the island to the north west of Cayo Guillermo, overlooking the resort. The Iberostar Ensenachos offers rooms from £73 per night, housed in bungalow-style complexes decorated in traditional colonial style. The hotel has an array of live entertainment throughout the day, boasts an onsite spa, and can arrange a variety of local day trips.
