Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, is located off the northern coast along the Jardines del Rey island chain in the Ciego de Ávila Province. Despite officially being a part of Cuba, the purpose-built resort has a very small Cuban population, with many who work in the resort commuting daily from Morón on the mainland. Cayo Guillermo is a family friendly Cuba suitable for everyone.
July is one of the warmest months in Cayo Guillermo, with temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees Celsius which continue well into August. Lows can be as high as 23 degrees. Sea temperatures rise significantly to around 29 degrees, while rainfall drops to a lower, yet still reasonably heavy, 90 mm over the month.
To make the most of the beautiful heats, visitors should spend some time on Playa Pilar Beach, widely considered to be one of Cuba's best sands. The beach is easily accessible from the Cayo Guillermo hotels, and from those in nearby Cayo Coco. The beach and shallow waters are free from rocks and seaweed, and there are plenty of seashells for the children to examine. However, if venturing deeper, keep an eye out for jellyfish during the high season. Many visitors are seen snorkelling in the clear waters as a great way to see the vibrant sea life.
The July weather is also a good time for enjoying the La Marina Beach Restaurant at the Iberostar Daiquiri hotel. This informal cafe-style eatery is situated right on the beachfront and is open for breakfast, serving up continental breads, cheeses, cereals and cold meats, and for light snacks in the early afternoon. Many people pop in just for a drink and to admire the beach and the ocean.
In neighbouring Cayo Coco, the Hotel Tryp offers rooms from £112 per night. All rooms command an ocean or garden view and the complex houses a full business centre so it's a popular choice for business as well as leisure travellers. The dedicated Playa Pilar beach bus stops at the hotel daily, transporting guests to the beachfront for just £3.
