Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, is a resort destination along the Jardines del Rey, off the northern coastline. Once a small local fishing spot, it has been transformed into an exclusive tourist complex which can feel a million miles away from the 'real' Cuba. It's a place to relax, eat, drink, have fun, and enjoy the clear blue waters which stretch up to the Bahamas and Miami.
The weather is warm all year round in Cayo Guillermo, although January is the coolest month with temperatures ranging from 17 to 27 degrees Celsius. Sea temperatures are also chilly when compared to readings later in the year at roughly 25 degrees. Rainfall is moderate, but generally low compared to the annual average at 43 mm, similar to the precipitation levels in the neighbouring resort of Cayo Coco.
Kitesurfing is a popular activity in Cayo Guillermo due to the ideal wind conditions, especially on the stretch of beach outside the Sol Cayo Guillermo hotel. This hotel is welcoming of kitesurfers, although unfortunately equipment rental is not possible in the resort, so be sure to pack your own. During the busiest part of the day, the beach can become rather crowded, so it's best to keep a little further off the coastline.
The Sol Cayo Guillermo is home to the El Eden buffet restaurant. The restaurant is huge, with wooden patio style furniture and a self service, all-you-can-eat environment. It's open all day, with eggs, bacon, pancakes and other breakfast staples in the morning, and international dishes in the evenings, ranging from roasted meats to cheese pizzas. There's a wide dessert selection too.
The Meliá Cayo Guillermo, with rooms from £79 per night, is one of the main hotels in Cayo Guillermo. Rooms are brightly decorated, and feature private balconies or terraces with furniture overlooking the complex. There are a variety of activities on site, such as swimming, water sports and tennis, and the hotel operates an all-inclusive policy.
