Located on the Jardines del Rey island chain, Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, is a popular tourist destination that benefits from warm weather all year round. Based off the northern coast of the country, it's a very water-based resort, with an upscale marina to the east and some of Cuba's best beaches to the west towards the national parks. The resort has come a long way from its fishing town days.
The weather in February is hot and reasonably dry compared to the rest of the year. Temperatures range between 18 degrees Celsius overnight to 28 degrees during the hottest part of the day, and sea temperatures are a pleasant 25 degrees, although this is slightly on the cool side compared with later months. Rainfall is moderate at 43 mm, which increases as the summer approaches.
As Cayo Guillermo is a water-based resort, there are plenty of water sports on offer, including scuba diving. The Green Moray International Diving Center is located at the Meliá Cayo Guillermo hotel and offers equipment rental for those who don't have their own. The centre transports divers to the nearby marina along the road to Cayo Coco, where the dives occur. Particularly suitable for beginners, the dives aren't the most challenging in Cuba, but there's plenty to see under the surface.
The international Don Guillermo restaurant, located inside the Sol Cayo Guillermo hotel, is considered to be one of the most sophisticated eateries in the resort. There is a wide choice of pastas and grills, with the filet mignon classed as the restaurant's signature dish. This is a very popular eatery so be sure to reserve a table well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Some accommodations in the heart of Cayo Guillermo can be a little expensive, so visitors may wish to stay in the nearby resort of Cayo Coco, just 20 miles along the coastline The Sol Cayo Coco offers rooms from £67 per night and has a taxi service for easy access to Cayo Guillermo. All 270 rooms have stunning views either over the ocean, the lush gardens or the swimming pools.
