Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, is an island in the southern Caribbean, attached to the mainland by a series of roads and bridges connecting the neighbouring islands. As one, the islands are known as the Jardines del Rey, although are unofficially referred to as the 'Cuban Keys', demonstrating the similarity in both relaxed atmosphere and warm weather to the Florida keys.
Cayo Guillermo tends to experience wet summers and dry winters, similar to nearby Varadero. As such, December is the resorts driest month of the year, with light rainfall totalling just 39 mm across the month. Temperatures are high at 18 to 28 degrees Celsius, although this is considerably low compared to a typical Cuban summer. Sea temperatures are about average at 26 degrees.
Cayo Guillermo, being such a small and tourist-oriented resort, isn't usually big on celebrating national events and holidays, although that changes in December. New Years Eve is a big deal here, with parties and events held in all four of the resorts hotels. Some of the biggest events are the gala dinners held throughout the hotels, where mouth watering dinners are served up before the stroke of midnight.
For a New Year's drink, the Havana Theatre Club Bar at the Iberostar Daiquiri hotel is a top choice. This bar is a far more relaxed and casual place, especially on New Year's Eve, than some of the hotel's other bars, and is particularly suited to those who want to enjoy a pleasant drink in good company without the hustle and bustle of the clubs.
The 4* Sol Cayo Guillermo offers rooms from £101 per night and is one of only 4 hotels located in the heart of Cayo Guillermo. It is located right on the beachfront, just half a mile from the magnificent coral reefs, and all rooms feature a private balcony or terrace ideal for enjoying the warm winter heats of Cuba.
