The history of Cassis is of a small fishing village to a developing town where industry began of drying cod, manufacturing of olive oil, clothing, wine making and the utilization of local stone which has made the town famous as it has been used for building of many ports and the statute of liberty in New York City. Nowadays tourism and wine making are the main industries in cassis.
Cassis has a stunning topography of cliffs and calanques which take up a large part of the shore of the Mediterranean.
The weather is a Mediterranean type climate and is warmer than the north of France especially in summer. Summers can be warm and even quite hot, when rain rarely falls. Winters are generally mild and sunny.
Due to its location, Cassis is said to have a temperate micro-climate as it is located between mountains and sea.
The enjoyable weather can be interrupted by changeable cold, windy weather brought about by a northerly wind called the mistral. There was an avalanche alert reported in the South of France in May 2010 due to winds of up to 120kph. The area had not seen waves of this height since 1985 and never as late in the year as May.
