Weather Overview
Carvoeiro, also commonly known as Praia de Carvoeiro is a town and holiday resort located in Portugal's Algarve. The beach resort is about halfway between Albufeira and Portimão on the south coast of Portugal.
The resort is very small (there's three main streets) and remains unspoiled, although there is a good range of restaurants, shops and cafés, making it a great choice for families and couples looking for a peaceful escape. There's plenty of beauty to be found too, as Carvoeiro is set in cliffs, surrounded by white-washed houses, gardens and cobbled streets. Down by the sea, there's a choice of secluded coves and beaches for holiday makers to enjoy.
Carvoeiro is a popular holiday destination thanks to its beautiful scenery and lovely weather conditions, especially in the summer. The whole of the Algarve is known for its hot and sunny weather; there's an annual average of 3000 sunshine hours and 300 sunny days a year. In fact, the Algarve is one of the sunniest places in the world, even more so than California. If this sounds like heaven, then Carvoeiro is no different. The resort has a desirable Mediterranean climate with long, hot summers, enjoyable spring and autumn months and a mild winter. Summer is the peak season for hot and sunny weather, with up to 14 hours of sunshine a day and almost no rain.
Summer Weather In Carvoeiro
Starting at the end of May, summer is peak tourist season in the resort with many travelling to the town to enjoy its beautiful sandy shores and clear blue skies. The weather is at its best in summer, with high temperatures, dry weather and an abundance of sunshine. The sea is also warm enough for swimming at this time of year, rising to a lovely 23°C.
One of the biggest draws of summer in Carvoeiro is that the resort receives virtually no rain during peak summer months. July is the driest month of the year with just 1mm of rainfall throughout the whole month.
Temperature
Average temperatures normally rise to the mid-twenties during summer, peaking at 24°C in the hottest months of July and August, which is generally hot but not too uncomfortable. However, it can be humid during August, and high temperatures can sometimes rise to around 29°C during the hottest time of the day.
Sunshine Hours
There's also a lot of sunshine during the summer, with 13 hours of sun in June and 14 hours in July. These combining factors mean that holiday makers should take care in the sun, always wearing a high level sunscreen and staying in the shade between the peak hours of 12 and 3pm.
Mid-summer is very hot and sunny in Carvoeiro, which is preferential for some holiday makers looking to get a tan and relax on the beach. However, those looking for lower temperatures might want to visit the resort at the end of summer, during September, when the weather is still great but a little cooler and it's starting to become quieter. Prices also start to fall but all attractions are still open for you to enjoy.
Sea Temperature
The sea temperature stays warm, so if you want to head to the beach and swim in the sea, it's ideal. The evenings are also still very pleasant, with lows of 17°C in September, which allows you to visit one of the many restaurants, bars and pubs in town and take in the sights.
Autumn Weather In Carvoeiro
Autumn in Carvoeiro marks the short transitional period between summer and winter in the resort. Between October and November, temperatures start to drop and the crowds of tourists begin to leave.
Temperature
While temperatures are lower than the summer, it is still quite pleasant at this time of year. Average temperatures are around 19°C in October falling to just 15°C in November while lows never drop below 11°C. Some holiday makers may even prefer these temperatures and if so, can benefit from the resort being much more secluded and holidays being lower in price.
Rain
Rainfall does increase dramatically from summer to autumn, which is worth considering when planning your holiday. From 14mm in September, October sees 67mm of rainfall while November has 86mm, so you may need to pack an umbrella. Autumn is still relatively sunny in Carvoeiro though, with 8-9 hours of brilliant sunshine a day.
Winter Weather In Carvoeiro
Rain
Winter is not prime tourist season in Carvoiero and as a result, the resort will be much quieter. The reason for this is because winter is rainy season and December is the wettest month of the year, with 94mm of rain and 9 wet days.
Sunshine Hours
It is also the least sunny time of the year, although there is still 6 hours of sunshine, so if you decide to visit at this time of the year you'll be able to soak up much more sun than you could at home.
Temperature
The winter months bring milder temperatures to the resort too, so it's best to pack extra clothing like a light jacket during this time. However, even during winter, temperatures are still in the mid-teens; December to February sees an average temperature of 12 to 13°C. Lows don't ever fall below 8°C even in winter, so for those travelling from the UK, it will never feel completely chilly.
Sea Temperature
Sea temperatures are at their coolest during winter months too at just 17°C and will probably be too cold to take a dip for most people.
Spring Weather In Carvoeiro
Temperature
The months of spring begins around March in Carvoeiro and they bring increasingly warm weather to the resort compared to the colder winter months. Average temperatures rise from 14°C in March to 17°C in May, though lows can still fall to single figures at night. Although early spring probably isn't warm enough to visit the beach, this season is a good time to visit the resort if you want to take part in activities such as walking, cycling or golf, as temperatures are much more comfortable. However, by the end of spring, temperatures can reach highs of 22°C, which is almost summer territory. This means that beach weather is almost guaranteed.
Rain
After the wet autumn and winter months, the rainy weather decreases in Carvoeiro. There's still a small chance of rainfall, with 38mm of rain in April, but the weather is generally much drier than spring in the UK.
Sunshine Hours
Carvoiero sees sunshine all year round, but levels increase rapidly in the spring. March sees 9 hours of sunshine a day, rising to 12 gloriously sunny hours a day in May.
