Weather lowdown
As autumn arrives, Calis Beach closes for its traditional tourism season. Despite this fact, there are still plenty of opportunities for sightseeing around the region and in the resort itself, and the still mild temperatures make exploring very easy indeed.
November sees an average temperature of around 15°C, which reaches a very respectable 20°C as an average high temperature throughout the month. This means that t-shirt sleeves will still be on show despite the reputed cold weather during this month of the year! The likelihood of cooler evenings is a realistic prospect however, as the average low falls to a chilly 10°C during the evening hours, and you will notice the temperature drop around the 5pm mark, as the darkness hours begin to fall; if you are out and about, simply remember a jacket for this time of the day.
Sunshine hours are still as respectable as the temperature at this time, at around 9 hours per day; the sun at this time of year is certainly dazzling and when you are out and about experiencing the quieter times of the year, this is a beautiful backdrop to enjoy.
The main theme of this month however is rain, as we move into the rainiest month of the year on average. The resort experiences around 114mm of rain throughout the month, which affects 8 days on average. The answer to this? Simply remember an umbrella! Whilst some downpours can be prolonged, you will have prior notice of a storm brewing, so simply keep checking forecasts if you think there is a likely chance of rain.
Beach time however is still possible on those dry, warm days. The average water temperature sits at a very pleasant 21°C despite the end of the year looming large, and it's not unusual to see people sat on the beach enjoying the sun with a picnic at this time of the year.
Where to stay
November may be the wettest month in the resort, but there are plenty of reasons to visit this beautiful area of Turkey at this time. There are many hotels and apartments still open, including Lighthouse Nadia Aparts, which gives you a home away from home feel to your visit. Enjoy free Wi-Fi, as well as comfortable apartments with everything you need, including a dishwasher and fully equipped kitchen. There is also a year-round swimming pool on-site.
Hotel Bahar is an equally comfortable choice, with an on-site bar and everything you need close by. Rooms are either sea view, mountain view, or pool view, with a shared lounge, and homely atmosphere. Alternatively, Aqua Marine Apartments are located around half a mile from the resort, with an outdoor swimming pool for those warmer days, set in fragrant, green garden space. Again, everything you need is on hand, including a washing machine, in comfortable, attractive surroundings.
What to do
You might not think about taking a holiday to Turkey during the quieter months, especially not to a beach resort, but there is still plenty to experience during the cooler and quieter times. If you want a true expedition however, and you're keen to see more of the local cultures and traditions of this rich and intoxicating country, then an overnight stay in Istanbul is certainly for you.
This might sound like a ridiculous idea because of the sheer scale of the distances involved, however Istanbul is only an hour and a half away by plane from the nearest airport in Dalaman, and you will find extremely cheap prices no matter what time of year. Istanbul is full of amazing sights to see, and it really is a city like nowhere else on earth, simply because it is the only place to straddle two continents. You certainly won't get to see everything, far from it, but a taste of it is definitely to be considered.
If you prefer to stay in the area however, then head to the picturesque and laid-back Selale Yaka Park. During a warm, dry day you can chill out in total beauty here, with waterfalls and wildlife all around you. There is a water-mill and small restaurant, which is particularly nice to head for breakfast, and this time of year means you won't experience crowds which may ruin your peace and quiet during a different month, such as June or August, for example.
Those who like to play the role of a great explorer should head to Gemiler Island. During the summer months you will find crowds here, because this is where many boat trips head, however during the quieter times you can really get into the island and explore, where you will find ruins of many different churches, amongst other things too. There is a small charge for admission, and you will need to head off on a boat trip to arrive here, but there are many privately rented gulets at this time of year, so you can enjoy the scenery as you sail, as well as explore this beautiful island.
Restaurants & nightlife
November sees less in the way of choice when it comes to nightlife, but a laid-back and more residential feel to the resort instead. Korsan Beach Café Bar is a popular choice amongst locals, and the perfect way to unwind after a busy day, with a large cocktail menu to work your way through.
Zentara Beach & Kitchen offers traditional dishes to try, although there are also many European dishes on the menu, so fussy eaters won't go hungry! Alternatively, for something very traditional, try Bedestan Hatay Ocakbasi. This is an authentic ocakbasi restaurant, which is basically a BBQ meat restaurant. Try the mixed grill and you won't be eating again for a few hours, as you'll be so full! This is a great way to sample some authentically spiced meats and dishes.
