Weather lowdown
Calis Beach is a wonderful destination to visit regardless of the month, but it is obviously best known for its peak summer months of fun. January is the coldest month in the resort, but despite this fact, the temperatures you will experience are nowhere near as cold as some other resorts around Europe at this time of year.
You can expect an average temperature of around 11°C, which can rise as high as 15°C during the warmer parts of the day. Evenings are certainly rather chilly however, so do remember to take a jacket with you if you are heading out into the early evening; you will notice a distinct drop in temperature around 4pm, when the average low can reach around 6°C.
Despite the chilly evenings, the sun certainly shines at this time, and the first month of the year experiences an average of 8 hours of sun per day, making a wander around the resort a must do.
It is true of destinations with typical Mediterranean climates that winters are mild but rainy, and whilst this certainly isn't the rainiest month, as that title falls to November, you can expect an average of 86mm of precipitation throughout this month, which does affect around 10 days to some degree on average again. Simply be prepared, but check forecasts to be up to date with developments. Winter storms can and do happen at this time, but you will be given fair warning beforehand.
If you're wanting to swim in the Mediterranean, this perhaps isn't the best month for it, with an average sea temperature of 17°C, however water-sports involving a wet-suit are quite plentiful at this time, such as diving or snorkelling for example. There is still plenty to do during this month, despite the off-season status and slightly chillier weather, and this is the ideal time to explore Turkey's traditions and cultures.
Where to stay
January may be in the midst of winter in Calis Beach, but there are still many hotels and apartments open for those who want to explore the area away from the main tourism season. Many are situated between the resort and nearby Fethiye, or in the centre of the resort itself. The great thing about this area is that public transport is cheap and easy to use, so you won't have a problem getting around.
Nevada Hotel & Spa is a great choice for a comfortable place to stay during your visit, and is situated around 1km away from the centre of town, close to the main promenade. You can choose between half board or B&B, depending on your preferences, and the on-site spa offers treatments and massages for a truly relaxing stay perfect during a chilly or rainy day.
Alternatively, Harman Hotel is a great family choice of accommodation, close to everything you will need. Family rooms are available, as well as standard rooms, and it is on a B&B basis, so you don't need to head out too early for breakfast.
If however you want something truly special, then try Tiryaki Boutique. This five-star establishment is located between the two resorts, and offers a relaxing and sophisticated option for your accommodation. You can choose between B&B or half board, and the on-site a la carte restaurant will cater for your needs regardless of your choice, with a range of on-site facilities to enjoy too.
What to do
The quieter season during January and the coming few months gives you the ideal way to truly experience authentic life in Calis Beach. You won't see much in the way of tourists, but this is a good thing if you want to really immerse yourself in traditions. Speak to locals, walk around and try and speak a few words of Turkish, and you will soon be welcomed into the fold, whilst also getting to experience Turkish hospitality at its very best.
One of those traditions is breakfast time. Turkey makes a big deal out of breakfast, and you will certainly be full for the rest of the day. Many restaurants which are open during the winter season will serve this traditional meal, and if you can go with a larger group, perhaps some locals you have met, then you will get more out of it. Try menemen, a delicious form of Turkish omelette, and if you like your coffee strong, give Turkish coffee a go!
Despite the colder temperatures, getting around the area is easy, and there is cheap and good quality bus service running between neighbouring resorts. Fethiye is very close by, and this is a pretty resort to explore. Fethiye Old Town is a beautiful place to explore during the quieter times, and there are many small shops to check out, with more than enough souvenirs to take back home.
During those bright but chilly January days, get wrapped up warm and head out to do a spot of walking. The very popular Lycian Way shows you not only history but nature too, whilst also getting a spot of exercise at the same time. You don't have to walk it all, as that would take a considerable length of time, but just a section of it, from one area to another, will give you an insight into the rich history of this part of the country.
Restaurants & nightlife
January doesn't mean a total close down of everything in Calis Beach, and there are plenty of entertainment options available for those who choose to visit this beautiful resort during the off season. Many restaurants stay open throughout the year, with ex-pats and locals favouring them during this time of year.
Café Soul & Bar is a laid-back choice for those who want to catch a big football match, enjoy a few drinks, and some delicious food at the same time. This is a predominantly British bar, which serves the usual homemade food you would expect from such a place, in a central position.
Alternatively, if you fancy a spot of Italian food then you have a couple of choices. Da Vinci is owned and run by an Italian family, so you can expect authentic flavours, or La Casa De Mamma is famous for its huge calzones, again in a central location, on the beach.
