Thanks to Brighton's proximity to the sea, January in the city is slightly warmer than in London and other cities around the country. However, it's the middle of winter in the city and temperatures can still drop as low as freezing.
Rain is a common sight in January and snow can occasionally fall too. When it does, the salt in the sea air means that it rarely settles and, when it does, not for long.
The sea wind can be very cold so, if you're visiting at this time of the year, make sure you bring a warm coat with you. You'll be needing it.
There are plenty of crisp, sunny winter days to be enjoyed in January too and a number of indoor attractions when you don't want to be outside.
January means January Sales and Brighton's shopping facilities are fantastic. The top high street brands are represented, most of which can be found in Churchill Square. Alternatively, the Lanes and North Laines house everything from designer outlets such as Karen Millen, small boutiques and independent shops and flea markets. A day spent exploring Brighton's shopping is bound to be productive.
January is also the last month the ice rink can be enjoyed, temporarily housed in Pavilion Gardens. This seasonal attraction is always popular with people of all ages over the festive season and is well worth a visit while it's still there.
New Years Eve in Brighton is celebrated in force and the nightlife doesn't stop as the month continues. There are plenty of bars and pubs to try out in town, as well as a number of popular nightclubs including Digital, Coalition and The Green Door Store.
For a quieter night, pubs and bars such as The Prince Albert (which was once branded with a Banksy), The Great Eastern and the White Rabbit are all great options with extensive drinks on offer.
The Holiday Inn is one hotel that is close to many of the main nightclubs, sat on the seafront just across the road from the beach. With discount room prices, it's ideal for anyone staying on a budget.
Alternatively, Premier Inn is another good choice for affordable accommodation. The hotel is right in the centre of town too, so is minutes away from most of the top attractions, including the shopping.
