December is winter in Brighton and, as such, the weather gets much colder. Temperatures can often drop to below freezing and snow can occasionally be seen, especially in recent years, with much harsher winters experienced.
For the most part though, Brighton's position on the Southern coast means that the winters stay relatively mild, if temperamental.
Despite the temperatures, Brighton is still a fantastic place to visit in December and there is plenty to entertain any tourist beyond the beach.
With Christmas approaching, the shops are getting busier in December. But there are plenty of different shopping facilities, from the high street and the mall to the boutique shops and flea markets on the Lanes, so Christmas shopping isn't going to be a problem. If you go earlier on in the month at the off peak hours (when most people are either at work or at school) you should be able to avoid the crowds of Christmas shoppers too.
Outside the main shopping centre, Churchill Square, street vendors set up Christmas market stalls, selling everything from food to gifts and jewellery.
Another seasonal attraction is the ice rink in Pavilion Gardens. The outdoor rink opens in November over the Christmas period, closing towards the end of January and is a popular attraction during the festive season.
Only the brave will welcome in Christmas morning with a swim in the sea. Members of the Brighton Swimming Club take the annual dip into the sea on December 25th and spectators are welcome.
When it comes to finding somewhere to stay, for a true taste of Brighton's culture try the boutique Hotel Pelirocco. Located minutes away from the centre of town and Brighton's main shopping area, each room has a unique style including 'Betty's Boudoir' decorated in 50's style in honour of Betty Page, the 'knitted room' decorated by a local artist and the 'Rough Trade' room, which is decorated to look like the inside of a Rough Trade Records shop. The hotel also offers great value for money, with room prices starting at very low prices.
Alternatively, for seafront views at discount prices, try the Holiday Inn. Located right on the seafront, the hotel's rooms offer fantastic views and it is only minutes away from the centre of town. Many of Brighton's main nightclubs are also just minutes away on the seafront.
