Boa Vista is the capital city of Brazil's northernmost state, Roraima. This is the only state in Brazil to be located entirely above the equator and although the area doesn't lie across the equator, it still enjoys a equatorial climate; high temperatures year round and abundant rainfall, giving the city a somewhat rainforest feel.
Although there's little temperature variation throughout the year in Boa Vista, September qualifies as the city's hottest month. Temperatures peak at about 30 degrees celsius, but only drops 5 degrees to 25 overnight. Travellers not used to the warm weather may find it quite uncomfortable at times, especially during the night.
September is the start of Boa Vista's dry season, although 'drier season' is probably more accurate. Roraima sees heavy rain all year round, although levels drop significantly during this month to around 59mm. This drier season lasts throughout the autumn and winter months.
To really enjoy September's glorious weather, spend some time on the beach. The Taumanam Park has a manmade coastline and beach along the Rio Branco and also has many little shops and cafes for souvenirs and refreshments.
If the rains come, head to the Museu Integrado de Roraima. This museum displays the state's history and environment through numerous exhibits and is a top tourist attraction in Boa Vista. As well as educating visitors on the wildlife and nature of Roraima, there's plenty of artifacts belonging to the state's original settlers.
Stay at the PousadaTalisma for just £5 per night for a single room. Located just outside the city centre in the Liberdade area, visitors may be surprised at what's on offer for such a budget price. All rooms have a private bathroom, TV and air conditioning, and breakfast is served in the dining room each morning. The special thing about this hotel is that many of the staff speak English, so it's ideal for travellers whose Portuguese isn't quite up to scratch.
