Lying on the western bank of the Rio Branco in Roraima, Brazil, is the city of Boa Vista, the state capital. Architecturally, Boa Vista is a very modern city, but the area has a lot of rich history which is of great interest to many of the area's visitors.
The tropical type of climate that Boa Vista experiences means the rainy season lasts all year long, and with this comes great humidity. May is Boa Vista's wettest month, with 197.1mm of precipitation expected. However, temperatures are lovely and warm, ranging from 20 degrees celsius overnight, to 27 degrees during the day.
About 25 miles north east of the Boa Vista city centre, on the edge of the Rio Branco, is the Forte São Joaquim: the São Joaquim Fort. It is estimated that work for the fort began as early as 1756 to protect against Spanish and English invaders, although it was not completed until about 1775. The fort can be reached by boat trip up the Rio Branco from Boa Vista, and takes approximately 3 hours.
Near to the fort is the Fazenda de São Marcos. It's one of the largest farms in the area and was founded by St. Mark Nicholas Captain Sarmento de Sa, commander of the São Joaquim Fort in the eighteenth century. It was home to some of the first Roraima settlers and is a massive part of the history of Boa Vista.
Head back to the Boa Vista city centre to enjoy a night at the HotelEuzebios. Rooms are priced at an amazingly low £25 per night, and discounts of up to 15% are available for those paying by either debit card or cash. There's a restaurant on site, as well as an outdoor swimming pool for enjoying some of May's Brazilian heat.
