Boa Vista is the capital of Brazil's northernmost state, Roraima, and can be translated to 'nice view' or 'nice sight' in English. Its name refers to the city's location on the banks of the Rio Branco, and its proximity to the stunning flat-topped Monte Roraima.
Boa Vista is hot all year round, and July is no exception. It can reach up to 30 degrees celsius in the peak daytime heat, dropping only 7 degrees overnight to 23 degrees celsius. Unfortunately, Boa Vista is also wet all year round (although this is great for the area's amazing flora and fauna), and July sees about 161.4mm of rainfall throughout the month. Humidity is high so it's best not to overdo the outdoor activities.
Boa Vista is quite a religious city, and whether visitors are believers or not, they should definitely stop by the Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Carmo; the first church in the state of Roraima. It was built in 1909 by Germans and has a definite feel of European architecture to it. As well as being Roraima's oldest church, it's also thought to be one of the oldest buildings in the state and is one of the top tourist attractions in Boa Vista.
The locals of Boa Vista are accustomed to their wet climate, and whether there's rain or sun, they don't let the weather affect local events. One such event is the daily open air food court between the Avenue Captain Garcez streets, leading out from the city centre. It's a renowned tourist attraction in Boa Vista, but draws huge numbers of locals too.
Stay at the HotelBarrudada in the city centre for just £38 per night. Many rooms have balcony access and there's even a swimming pool and laundry room on site.
