The city of Boa Vista in Roraima, Brazil, is a modern city established in 1890. Designed in a fan-like arrangement to mimic that of Paris, the city incorporates cosmopolitan avenues, wide and open streets and large, scenic roundabouts similar to its French counterpart.
Although there's little temperature variation throughout the year in Boa Vista, January is one of the coldest months along with February, with highs of only 25 degrees celsius. Warm for Britain, but cool by Brazilian standards. Overnight sees temperatures drop to around 19 degrees, so evenings are generally pleasant, but some travellers may need a light jacket.
As well as being one of the coldest months, January is also Boa Vista's driest month. The state of Roraima is typically wet and humid, but January sees just 18mm on average during the month.
The low waters of the Rio Branco from November to April make January a perfect time for exploring the Praia Grande beach which is only accessible during these winter months. The beach is on the far side of the river, about 3.5 miles from the Boa Vista city centre. There's over 9 miles of white sand and it's a renowned sun trap, so is great for getting some winter sun. Boat trips across the river cost less than £2 per person for a round trip.
Another good beach, especially for visitors who want to enjoy some swimming, is Praia da Água Boa. It's a little further out at about 9 miles from Boa Vista's centre, but offers some of the cleanest and freshest water in the region.
Stay at Boa Vista's most popular hotel; the AipanaPlaza. Situated right in the hub of Boa Vista's activity, a room and breakfast costs from just £55 per night. There's a restaurant, bar and pool on-site as well as free parking, which is handy for travellers with a rental car.
