Boa Vista is the capital city of Brazil's northernmost state; Roraima. In fact, Roraima is the country's only state to be situated completely above the equator. The city is located on the western bank of the Rio Branco, with Manaus to the south, and Venezuela about 135 miles to the north.
The equatorial climate means there's not much variation in temperature throughout the year in Boa Vista. Even so, February is one of the city's coldest months and, along with January, sees temperatures peak at about 25 degrees celsius. This can be expected to drop to 19 degrees overnight.
Boa Vista's climate means it's generally very wet and humid, and as such there's normally quite a bit of rain the area. February sees around 21.8mm of precipitation on average which is low compared to the warmer summer months.
The drier conditions of February make it ideal for undertaking one of the most popular activities around Boa Vista. The city itself isn't a major tourist destination, but receives many visitors due to its proximity to Monte Roraima. At 2810 metres tall, this flat-topped mountain is Brazil's second highest peak. Hikes to the summit and back usually take 6 days allowing for some leisure time at the top, and the best route leaves from the river camp in Paraitepui, Venezuela.
Monte Roraima's summit has much to offer walkers, including unique flora and fauna found only on the mountain, the 'valley of the crystals'; a spectacular area with quartz, rock pools and the Roraima native black toad.
There are a number of summit camps for spending the night, and tours can be arranged through Geodyssey. The price of £1495 may seem steep, but this includes 5 nights camp accommodation, food and drink and guidance from experienced hikers and tour guides.
