December is the coldest month of the year in Bled.

Daytime temperatures only reach a high of 3°C, and the evenings can also be bitterly cold, with temperatures plunging to -2°C.

This is a very popular time of year to visit this Alpine resort as many people come here for a traditional Christmas. Indeed, the stunning beauty of the surroundings makes for a very romantic Christmas.

Due to the extremely cold temperatures, you must take care when out exploring the countryside to not contract colds or even hypothermia. Wrap up with hats, gloves, scarves and overcoats. Strong boots are a necessity as the heavy snowfall at this time of year make conditions underfoot quite treacherous.

Lake Bled sometimes freezes over at this time of year, but on clear days you can take a stroll around it shores.

Overlooking the lake is Castle Bled. Perched on a rocky cliff 130m high, this 1000 year old castle is well worth a visit. Inside there is a museum telling you more about the history of the area, as well as a herbal gallery, printing press and even a wine cellar.

Wine connoisseurs should definitely head to one of the regular wine tasting sessions held there.

The nearby capital city of Ljubljana is perfect at this time of year. Winding streets and old buildings are simply magical, and the tiny bars and cafes are a perfect way to while away those winter blues. There is a wealth of shops and restaurants, and culture vultures can also visit the many museums and art galleries dotted around.
