Located in the northern areas of Spain, Bilbao features a typical maritime or oceanic climate with quite little seasonal variation or extremes and moderate weather all year round. The characteristic summer weather is warm and pleasing, rarely ever being awkwardly hot and humid and very suitable for sunbathing and swimming in the nearby sea. Whereas the winter weather is relatively mild occasionally feeling a little chilly at night time.
Spring
In Bilbao the months of spring feature mild and pleasing weather with temperatures sitting at a comfortable 14 ºC or 15 ºC at the beginning of March, ascending to 17 ºC or 18 ºC by the end of April. Even though the months throughout spring experience plenty of sunny and warm days, precipitation levels during the spring time are also fairly high as the town sees many short showers and overcast days.
Summer
Spring very quickly turns into summer and Bilbao produces its best weather of the year. Long hours of sunshine, clear blue skies and high temperatures in the high twenties assure an enjoyable vacation for all holiday makers. Alike any city in Europe, July and August are Bilbaoâs two hottest months of the year as the town can occasionally see the temperature rise to the low thirties. Rainfall is relatively low during the summer and humidity remains minimal as the Nervion River and the Atlantic Ocean bring refreshing breezes helping to lower the daytime climates.
Autumn
Autumn is a very popular time to visit Bilbao, particularly in late-September to early-October when the climates are still warm and crowds from the summerâs peak season have eased off. The average temperature from September through until November remains particularly warm averaging anywhere from 20 ºC to 25 ºC. Similar to spring, rainfall is quite common during the autumn months; however showers are typically brisk and short-lived.
Winter
Although in comparison to the southern regions of Spain, Bilbaoâs winter climate is fairly cool, it is also noticeable warmer than other areas of the peninsula. December and January are the townâs coldest months of the year and temperatures still sit at a mild 12 ºC or 13 ºC during the day. Even ground frosts during the winter are infrequent in Bilbao, although snowfall has known to hit the region for one or two days in January.
