New Year's Day is observed as a national public holiday, so banks, government offices and businesses will be closed. Some shops and restaurants will remain open.
Religious
Cavalcade of the Three Kings đ
If you're looking for more religious festivities in Southern France, about an hour away from Béziers, the town of Perpignan hosts its Cavalcade of the Three Kings. The event celebrates the journey of the Three Wise Men to see the baby Jesus. The three kings parade through the town along with traditional music, fine foods, costumes, and many religious blessings.
The Epiphany đ
The Epiphany is the twelfth day after Christmas and marks the day when the Three Kings visited and presented gifts to Jesus after he was born. Though the Epiphany is not recognized as a public holiday, many people in France celebrate this religious event. Locals celebrate by gathering with family and friends and eating King's Cake. Bakeries all across Béziers, will be selling these special cakes throughout the month of January, but definitely the week leading up to January 6th. It is custom to find a figurine or some other trinket inside. Whoever finds the figurine in their slice, is named King or Queen for the day.
