Béziers, France, is often overlooked as a major holiday destination, and is considered one of the quieter towns in the Languedoc region. However, all that changes in August as the town hosts its world famous annual festival. The usually serene Béziers becomes a bustling and lively place, and this month is an excellent time to visit for travellers who prefer a bit more activity than this relaxed Mediterranean destination can usually provide.

Although July is considered to be the hottest and driest month of the year in Béziers, the weather throughout August is nothing to scoff at. The Mediterranean climate creates a stunning environment for travellers who come to experience the annual bullfighting festival, bringing warm temperatures ranging from 18 to 27 degrees Celsius, and low rainfall averaging just 29 mm across the month. However, August is expected to bring the last of the dry weather until the New Year.

The festival that takes place during August is the Feria de Béziers. It's the biggest festival in the Languedoc region and sees around one million people descend upon the small town. This bullfighting festival may be somewhat controversial, but visitors who don't wish to partake in this section of the festival can enjoy other activities hosted by the city, such as flamenco dancing and the equestrian village.

For dinner, enjoy the array of dishes created at La Raffinerie, situated overlooking the River Orb. The menu blends French and Mediterranean flavours, offering choices such as sausage pastries with mustard, coconut pork with cranberry, and vanilla & chestnut feuilletine. Although reservations aren't always necessary, be sure to book in advance if you want a table during the festival.

If looking for a good quality chain hotel in the town centre, take a look at the Mercure Béziers. The 58 rooms at this 3* property are equipped with air conditioning, TVs, Wi-Fi, and private bathrooms and cost from £66 per night. The hotel features a bar for its guests, and cold snacks and light bites can be ordered from the room service menu.
