Grand Hotel Terminus

Grand Hotel Terminus is a classically styled three-star hotel near Bergen's train station.  The hotel has been in operation for almost 100 years and is in a heritage-status building.  All 131 rooms feature bright, colorful furnishings for up to three people, flatscreen TVs, walk-in showers, and desks.  Some rooms also feature balconies and bathtubs.  The Terminus Whiskeybar has made "top ten bars in Bergen" lists and was also voted Norway's best whiskeybar.  They also serve excellent food including stonebaked pizza.  Breakfast is included for all guests.  The hotel also has a fitness suite and loaner bikes available for exploring Bergen.

This contemporary hotel is in central Bergen, just minutes from the harbor waterfront.  Scandic Neptun offers unassuming three-star lodging accommodations but is so much more than just a hotel.  The hotel has a number of warm, cozy rooms to choose from, with standard rooms for a family of four and suites available.  The suites also have sofas and a terrace balcony with city & sea views.  Scandic Neptun is also home to a bistro bar serving casual food and a refined French restaurant.  Breakfast is complimentary.  Scandic Neptun also displays one of the largest collections of art in Bergen outside of the KODE galleries.

Beaches in Bergen in June

Sandviken Sjobad

If the temperatures are warm enough and you're dying for a beach day near Bergen, you can check out Sandviken Sjobad.  This little area isn't really a beach; it's more of a boardwalk and lawn area where you can sunbathe on the grass and jump into the water.  There is also a diving board and barbecue grills available for you to use.  Sandviken Sjobad is 2km north of city center and is free to visit.

Bars and Restaurants

Spisekroken

Spisekroken is a classy Norwegian restaurant on Nordnes peninsula.  The dining room is very warm & cozy yet also elegant to go with the refined Norwegian cuisine you'll find here.  The award-winning chef has created some great dishes and is known for her veal.  Set menus are available, as are a la carte options.  Some of the delicacies you'll find on the menu include mussel soup, tartar of baby goat with wild garlic, gourmet veal with a parsley sauce and asparagus, and braised baby goat with citrus and anchovy.  Spisekroken is open Monday through Saturday from 4PM to 11PM and Sunday from 3PM to 10PM.

Marg & Bein

Marg & Bein is a Norwegian restaurant near the university and Lille Lugegaardsvannet park.  This is a cozy family restaurant with a modest, casual dining room with bright windows and a warm interior.  Their menu is seasonal and all ingredients are sourced from local farmers.  Some of their specialties include beef tenderloin, ox cheek, pork neck, and a wide variety of seafood dishes.  Marg & Bein has a great wine & craft beer selection to compliment your meal.  Marg & Bein is open Tuesday through Thursday from 4:30PM to 10:30PM, Friday & Saturday from 4:30PM to 9:30PM, and Sunday from 4PM to 8:30PM.

Pygmalion

One of the most notable cafes in central Bergen is Pygmalion, located one bock east of the seafood market.  This classic European café is decorated in checkered tablecloths, candles, and artwork covering the walls.  They often host art shows and are considered a gallery in addition to a café.  Their menu consists of reasonably priced healthy salads, sandwiches, light appetizers, and sweets.  Beverage selections range from cappuccinos to fine wine to craft beer.  Pygmalion is open daily from 11AM to 11PM.  Art selections rotate every month and most are for sale; they also occasionally host musicians.

Scruffy Murphy's

Scruffy Murphy's is a traditional Irish pub located across the street from Bergen harbor.  The interior ambience is what you would expect with dark wood tones, plush booths, and tall barstools.  They serve a large variety of beer, wine, and craft cocktails.  If you're looking for more than drinks, they have an exceptional food menu as well.  You'll find traditional pub food like wings, nachos, and shepherds pie, as well as salads, burgers, and steak.  There is no shortage of TVs for everyone to be able to watch a football match.  Scruffy Murphy's is open Sunday through Thursday from 1PM to 1:30AM and Friday & Saturday from 1PM to 2:30AM.

Things to do in Bergen in June

Mt. Floyen Funicular

There are seven prominent mountains surrounding Bergen, and one of them is Mt. Floyen.  Mt. Floyen rises 320m above Bergen and is very close to the city center.  The top of the mountain provides wonderful views of the sea, the city, fjords, and other mountains.  There is also a restaurant, shop, playground, and network of hiking trails at the top of Mt. Floyen.  The oldest mechanized method of getting to the top of Mt. Floyen is via the funicular, which starts just blocks from Bergenhus Fortress and Bryggen wharf.  There is also a walking & biking trail that goes to the top of the mountain and then continues to Ulriken Mountain.  The funicular is open from 7:30AM to 11PM.

Edvard Grieg Museum

One of the most notable composers in the world was Norwegian Edvard Grieg.  His former home, known as Troldhaugen, is now a museum dedicated to his life and works.  The house was built in 1885 and is where he would sit and compose many of his masterpieces.  The museum is open to public self-guided tours but informed local guides are also available to take you through the property and tell you about Edvard's life and contribution to the musical arts.  Edvard and his wife Nina are buried on the property.  Troldhaugen is open 9AM to 6PM and is located south of the Bergen airport.  You can take the light rail but will still have to walk 20 minutes from the stop.  There is also a café and shop at Troldhaugen; the museum is part of the KODE galleries.

Stoltzekleiven

One of the top activities to do in Bergen is Stoltzekleiven, a steep trail that leads up to Sandviksfjellet.  The start of the trail is approximately 30 minutes from city center, which is good because you'll want to get your legs warmed up for the climb.  The way to the trail is signed.  Once you get to the start there are 722 steep steps to conquer before reaching your reward phenomenal views of Sandviken and Byfjorden.  Most people continue to Mt. Floyen upon reaching the top; from here it is about 40 minutes of mostly easy walking (compared to what you just did) to the restaurant and funicular at Mt. Floyen.

Fjord Paragliding

When people think of visiting the Norwegian fjords they usually think of exploring via cruise ships or hiking.  But you can also get some breathtaking aerial views if you're up for it.  Paragliding over Voss isn't for everyone but is well worth it.  You'll start off with a short flight lesson from your pilot and be transported to the start.  Strap in, sprint down the launch hill, jump, then let your pilot do all the work while you just enjoy the view.  You'll see the farms, glaciers, towns, and fjords like only the eagles do.
