Beaches in Bergen in July
Helleneset
Helleneset is a popular swimming spot 15km from Bergen, about 15 minutes by bus. This isn't a beach, as there aren't any real beaches near Bergen, but it's a good place to sunbathe and take a dip in the North Sea on a warm day. There is also a small swimming pool, diving board, showers, and bathroom facility. The area is rather rocky but you can still find a small spot to lay out, catch some sun, and eat your lunch.

Colonialen Restaurant
One of the best Norwegian restaurants in Bergen is Colonialen Restaurant, located just a couple blocks north of Lille Lungegaardsvannet park. Colonialen is in a modern building to match their modern Norwegian cuisine and also offers seating in their garden area. The restaurant has a casual food & wine room adjoining their main dining room, where you'll find an exceptional rotating menu comprised of seasonal ingredients. Like most restaurants in Bergen, Colonialen's menu is heavy with seafood but also features other plates. On their tasting menu you'll find scallops, shrimp, mackerel, barley chicken, and dumplings. Wine pairings are available for the tasting menus. Colonialen Restaurant is open at 6PM Tuesday through Friday and 1PM on Saturday.
Brasilia Bergen
Bergen does have one Brazilian steakhouse, the Brasilia Bergen. This all-you-can-eat experience is located in central Bergen. All you have to do is choose your side items from the buffet and the main courses come to you all night long. The green side of the coaster on your table will signal the servers to come over with skewers of tender steak, pork, and chicken. Flip the coaster to the red side when you're done and enjoy your cocktails. Brasilia Bergen is open Monday from 4PM to 10PM, Tuesday through Thursday from 4PM to 11PM, Friday & Saturday from 4PM to midnight, and Sunday from 3PM to 10PM. Reservations are accepted.
Naboen Pub & Restaurant
A great late-night dining option in central Bergen is the Naboen Pub & Restaurant. The casual dining room is great for large groups and children. Dinner menu items include caviar, smoked fish, Arctic char with pumpkin cream, confit pork cheek with quinotto, and beef fillet with grilled vegetables. Apollon Platebar
Apollon Platebar is a fun fusion of album shop and bar. Their rustic rock & roll interior features a bar area across from boxes of CDs, vinyl, and other albums. They have a great selection of Norwegian draft beer and wine, as well as serving various coffee drinks. The interior is rather small and not great for large groups. Every so often they feature live music on their small stage where local bands can get some exposure. Apollon Platebar is open Monday through Saturday from 10AM to 12:30AM and Sunday from noon until 12:30 AM.
Things to do in Bergen in July
Bryggen Medieval Wharf
Bryggen is one of Bergen's most photographed and most recognized areas. The neighborhood was established in the 12th century and has gone through many cycles of destruction and rebuilding, mostly by fire. Today Bryggen is on UNESCO's World Heritage Site List. Walking through Bryggen is truly walking through time; the narrow cobbled streets were once the headquarters of the Hanseatic League trade empire. In these buildings today you'll find delicious restaurants, cozy cafes, and shops selling handcrafted items from a variety of trades. The Bryggens Hanseatic Museum is also a popular attraction, showcasing the various archeological finds around Bergen throughout the centuries.
Hardanger Fjord
One of Norway's most recognized natural landmarks is Hardanger Fjord. This fjord is 80km south of Bergen, is the second longest fjord in Norway, and the fourth longest fjord in the world. There are numerous outdoor activities near Hardanger Fjord. The more adventurous can go river rafting, glacier exploring, and paragliding. You can also just sit on a boat and relax while the captain takes you through the 900m-tall cliffs and waterfalls. There are also a number of hikes in the area suitable for all abilities and time constraints. Some of the villages around Hardanger Fjord also offer lodging options if you want to make a night of it.
Ulriken Mountain
One of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen is Ulriken, climbing 643m above the city right below it. Many people visit the top of Ulriken just for the spectacular views, but there's also a good restaurant on top and exploring the mountain is a great way to exercise. There are a few ways to the top; the most difficult is probably by hiking. You can hike directly to the top of Ulriken or take a trail from the top of nearby Mt. Floyen. You can also take the cable car to the top, which runs every day from 9AM to 9PM. After taking the cable car you can hike over to Mt. Floyen and take the funicular down, or just stay at Ulriken and admire the surrounding area through the provided telescopes.
Bergen Aquarium
The Bergen aquarium is wonderful way to spend half the day on Nordnes peninsula. This aquarium houses over 300 species in 60 different tanks, including some non-marine animals too. The smaller tanks inside the aquarium feature a variety of small fish and marine invertebrates while the larger outdoor pools feature sea lions, penguins, and crocodiles. The aquarium has a regular schedule for animal shows, feedings, and interactions with visitors. You'll also find some monkeys at the Bergen aquarium also. This is a great place to learn about the sea life that sustains the people of Norway. The aquarium is open daily from 9AM to 6PM in July.
