Things to do in Bergen in April

Nordnes Peninsula

Nordnes is the name of the peninsula south of Bergen harbor and Bryggen wharf.  This peninsula has enjoyed separation from the bustling downtown Bergen area but has seen quite a bit of popularity recently.  Some of the attractions on the Nordnes peninsula include the Bergen Aquarium, Ballast Pier, and Nordnes Park with spectacular ocean views.  You'll find some statues here and there if you pay attention, like the Amalie Skram statue, a monument to the leader of Norway's women's rights movement.  Nordnes is full of picturesque, colorful Victorian neighborhoods and cozy cafes.

Hardanger Fjord

Hardanger Fjord is the second longest fjord in Norway and the fourth longest fjord in the world.  You've most likely seen pictures of it without even knowing it.  The fjord is 80km south of Bergen and makes a great day trip.  The tallest point in the fjord is 900m.  One of Norway's largest glaciers abuts the fjord, and if you don't feel like ice climbing there are also numerous hiking trails throughout the fjord.  These hikes will take you through breathtaking vistas and waterfalls, and also fascinating cultural exhibits.  Cruise ships also regularly take day-trippers up the fjord to admire its geology.

Ulriken Mountain

Ulriken is the 643m mountain immediately to the east of Bergen, and is one of the many mountains surrounding the city.  The views from the top are phenomenal.  There are a few ways to get to the top.  You can take the footpath to the top, a strenuous climb that can be quite dangerous during rains.  Another walk starts at the nearby Floyen mountain, which you can reach from the popular funicular.  Or you can take the Ulriken cable car, which runs daily from 9AM to 9PM.  Once at the top you can enjoy the views at the mountaintop restaurant and take a peek through the provided telescopes.  The tram closes during inclement weather and it's best to wait for a clear day.

KODE Art Museums

Bergen has a rich arts culture, including both performing and graphical arts.  The KODE art museum is the center of it all.  This massive museum complex is on the south side of Lille Lungegaardsvannet park and is one of the largest museums in the Nordic countries.  The KODE 1 building is home to fine arts, KODE 2 features temporary exhibits and the museum bookstore, KODE 3 features works from Edvard Munch and other artists from the Norwegian Golden Age, and KODE 4 is the first art museum in Norway designed specifically for children.  The museum has its own restaurant and café, and there are a few others to choose from in the immediate vicinity.
