October is a warm, humid month in the Dominican Republic. Daytime temperatures can reach a high of 31°C and only drop to a low of 22°C in the evening, meaning that if you do not like intense heat you may be very uncomfortable.

October is of course the height of hurricane season in the Caribbean, so if you visit during this month you are likely to experience one. Look out for weather warnings at your hotel and take any advice that staff give you.

There is also a likelihood of rain showers during the day. However, these tend to be quite short so will not spoil your day; in fact, it may be a nice way to cool off from the intense heat!

If, however, the weather is fair, then doubtless you will be spending your days lounging on the beach!  And with so many Blue Flag and other award winning beaches in the area, you are spoilt for choice. This part of the Dominican Republic tends to have quieter, less busy beaches than elsewhere.

However, make sure you drink plenty of fluids and wear sunscreen with a high SPF to avoid sunburn and sunstroke.

Scuba diving is extremely popular in this area. With warm waters and high visibility, hiring some scuba equipment is a great way to explore the coral reef with its abundance of marine life, or one of the many shipwrecks in the bay.

Scuba lessons are available for less experienced divers and, of course, you should not attempt a risky dive beyond your capability.

For the evenings, head to La Romana for the best bars and restaurants. Younger holiday makers will also find several nightclubs to dance the night away in!
