Despite being a bustling city, Avignon, France, maintains an air of spaciousness and openness thanks to its numerous park areas and public gardens as well as the Rhône River flowing past the city's northern boundary. The prominence of nature makes Avignon one of the most visually appealing cities in southern France.

As late summer begins to edge into early autumn, the temperatures drop and the rainfall rises; a common feature of the Mediterranean climate that's experienced by many cities in the same region such as Cavaillon. Temperatures range from 14 to 26 degrees Celsius and rainfall is roughly 66 mm over the month.

Avignon is full of museums. The Lavender Museum is located just on the outskirts of Avignon and sees around 50,000 tourists each year who come to understand the history of the plant, its uses in medicine and cosmetics, and to sample some of the smells and tastes of different types of lavender.

Restaurant Les 5 Sens is ideal for the foodie traveller. There's plenty on the menu, although it's famous for its set menus: the pleasure menu which features meats and fishes such as steak and monkfish; and the curiosity menu which features more experimental dishes such as parmesan crusted squid and beetroot marinated salmon.

The Hotel Cristol, with rooms from just £35 per night, is perhaps one of the best value accommodations in the city centre. Situated amongst parkland areas, the hotel prides itself on its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and rooms with all the modern conveniences travellers look for such as an en suite bathroom, TV and air conditioning.
