Avignon, France, is a large historical city in the south of the country adorned with medieval buildings surrounding an ancient centre. The city is one of the best examples of preserved architecture in Europe and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the Palais des Papes, Episcopal Ensemble and Avignon Bridge.
The weather in Avignon in February is still very much cool and wintery, with temperatures of 2 to 12 degrees Celsius; just a touch higher than those of January. Rainfall remains moderate at 33 mm over the month, and continues to increases steadily until the drier summer.
One of Avignon's most visited sites is the Notre Dame des Doms cathedral. It is considered to be the city's main church and is as much a place of worship as it is a sightseeing spot. The cathedral stands amongst beautiful parkland overlooking the Rhône River. Dating from the 12th Century, it's an architectural marvel, with the Virgin Mary standing proudly atop the building.
Party the night away in a truly contemporary club located amongst the city's historical sites. Bokao's is open until the early hours and its best feature is undoubtedly the outdoor patio complete with swimming pool. It may not sound appealing in the cool February temperatures, but having champagne served in the warm jacuzzi certainly does.
For fantastic value in the city centre, stay at the 2* Hotel Boquier for just £39 per night. The hotel is located in a quiet area within easy reach of the best tourist spots, and is also near to the Tourism Office so it's ideal for those new to Avignon. Rooms sleep between 1 and 4 guests so it's a good choice for groups, and the babysitting service is perfect for those with young children.
