Located just 50 miles from the Mediterranean coastline, Avignon, France, is a popular resort destination for those with a love of history, culture, architecture, natural scenery and fine dining. Despite boasting a well preserved city centre, Avignon is a wonderful blend of old and new and appeals to all kinds of travellers.

With the arrival of spring comes higher temperatures in keeping with the region's Mediterranean climate, and highs of up to 20 degrees Celsius are common, while evenings are a little milder at roughly 7 degrees. The famous April showers are common here, with rainfall the highest the year has seen so far at around 53 mm across the month.

Avignon has an array of art museums, with the Musee du Petit Palais considered one of the finest in Provence. Exhibitions include pieces from the late 18th Century glass period, modernist photographs by 19th Century artist Gustave Le Gray and a collection of pictures from Paris in 1900 which is equally as fascinating and accessible to art novices as it is to seasoned art lovers.

After a day of culture, unwind a little at Les Ambassadeurs, a nightclub in the heart of Avignon with a focus on house music and a touch of disco. The beauty of this club isn't just that it's close to many restaurants and hotels, but also that it has a large dance floor yet ample seating. Entry is free here, and there's often themed nights sponsored by big name brands.
