What's the Weather like in Atlas Mountains in May

Sunshine

The weather in the Atlas Mountains in May makes this a wonderful time of year to visit the area. With 9 daily sunshine hours excepted, the air is clear, bright and warm but not so hot that it gets uncomfortable.

Rain

Unlike the downpours that can be experienced in April, May is a relatively dry month in this spectacular mountain region. Expected precipitation for the entire month is usually only 9mm with an average of only 3 days ever experiencing any sort of rainfall at all.

Temperature

Average daily temperatures in the Atlas Mountains in May are usually around 22°. However with highs of up to 29°C, there is plenty of warmth for those in direct sunshine further down the summits. Temperatures in the area do tend to fluctuate significantly according to your position on the mountains, with peak areas known to hold on to their snow even during the warmest months of the year.

On average in May, temperatures in less exposed areas should not fall below 15°C, even at night. But this does depend on you remaining closer to sea level, rather than on the peaks of some of the highest peaks. Higher altitudes will experience a significant drop in temperature, and lack of cloud cover during this period will also dramatically reduce the temperature at night.

Though the weather forecast for May in the Atlas Mountains is always relatively stable, it is essential to be prepared for rapid changes in weather conditions. Both sun protection and cold weather clothing should be on hand at all times during a visit to the Atlas Mountains, even in the lead up to summer.

For those that do wish to warm up after a cool day on the Mountains, Marrakesh offers a much more reliable, warm climate during May and can be less than a 45 minute bus ride away.
