What's the Weather like in Atlas Mountains in July
Temperature
July in the Atlas Mountains is typified by long hot sunny days and beautifully clear nights. Though average temperatures of 29°C ensure the weather is never mild in this region of Africa, temperatures will fluctuate dramatically depending on your altitude and the level of shade available. It is therefore always wise to be prepared for any eventuality, even during the peak summer months in the Atlas Mountains.
The Chergui desert wind is at its strongest during the months of July and August. This dry, hot wind can be very powerful at times, and brings with it a very dry, dusty covering that can be uncomfortable to unprotected eyes, especially when trekking. It can also bring with it hikes in temperature of up to 10°C which can make areas of the Atlas Mountains significantly hotter.
In general, average highs of 37°C are quite normal for this time of the year, however it can get a lot hotter and a lot colder. Average lows of 21°C occur quite regularly during the month of July. But in shaded areas or in secluded ravines, as well as when up the mountains, the climate can vary greatly.
Rain
Unlike the dry months either side of July, there is the chance of some rain during the month. While there is still only the chance of rain on one or two days in the month, average expected rainfall during July is approximately 11mm. This is four times greater than that of either June or August. However, with such little precipitation expected even when it does rain, this provides little relief from the relentless heat.
Sunshine
11 hours of average daily sunshine also makes July the brightest month of the year in the Atlas Mountains. Any visitor therefore has to be very wary of the power of the sun throughout the entire day, rather than just at peak times. Sun protection is vital for all guests to the area, while the shade of the mountains offers welcome relief to many.
