What's the Weather like in Atlas Mountains in January
Temperature
Right in the middle of the winter season, January sees the coldest annual weather in the Atlas Mountains. However at a very mild average temperature of 13°, the climate is still attractive to many thousands of visitors from across the world.
Average low temperatures can fall below 6°C during the month. However with a variance of 4,000 meters in altitude, the air temperature can feel very different depending on which part of the mountains you are in.
Peak lows of -24.3°C were recorded in the ski resort of Ifrane in the Atlas Mountains on 11th February 1935, illustrating just how variable the climate can be in this region. It also makes the Atlas Mountains the official site of the coldest place in Africa in history.
Sunshine
While the weather can be a little chilly during January, the Atlas Mountains can still offer some beautiful days of clear crisp sun, for the 5 daily sunshine hours excepted during the month. And with only 6 days of expected rainfall throughout the month, visitors to the Atlas Mountains during the first month of the year can enjoy some very fine weather.
Rainfall
This low level of precipitation, which usually amounts to no more than 24mm during the entire month, is essential for the many skiers and snowboards that visit the region during the time, offering a beautiful covering of snow for those that wish to face the summits.
January is also one time of the year when the average temperatures experienced in the mountains are similar to that of nearby Marrakech. However this situation does change significantly as we move closer to the summer months.
Temperature highs of up to 19° during January offer plenty of opportunities for hiking and walking through the mountains. And for those that like to experience the exhilaration of a winter mountain climb, this is the ideal time to visit the Atlas Mountains.
