The town of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Ascona is located in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticinio in the country of southern Switzerland. It lies on the banks of Lake Maggiore which is a large lake to the south side of the Alps. It is the largest lake of Italy and second largest of the southern Switzerland. Ascona is Switzerlandâs lowest lying town. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The town was built around the 16th century church of San Pietro e Paolo and was once a former fishing village but is now a popular tourist destination where people visit for the weather, attractions and culture.
The topography in Ascona is mountainess with a panorama of the lake and the Alpsmaking it a beautiful setting.
The weather in Ascona is a mild Mediterranean climate of sunny days, moderate rainfall and occasional snow. Due to its location with the Alps temperatures can be quite cool across the seasons.
There is a temperate microclimate prevailing over the lake with the Alps protecting it from the cold northern air. During the winter the lake helps to keep temperatures higher as the water releases heat energy slower than air. The temperatures are cooled down in the summer by the breezes which blow on the waterâs surface.
