The summer season has officially started, giving way to a lot of tourist and local activities that can be readily enjoyed under the sun. However, May weather in Aqaba is not particularly hot and dry in comparison to the other cities of Jordan.
This is because the city is nestled between the mountainous regions of the country and the serene Gulf waves of the Red Sea. This makes the summer heat less blistering than that of the desert because it is perfectly protected by nature itself.
The temperature of the city has an average high peak of 35°C or 95°F. Its lowest peak would be around 21°C or 70°F. If you are planning to go to Aqaba at this month, pack some summer clothing such as shorts, casual dresses, flip-flops and rubber shoes. Throw in some light sweaters to bat off the chillness of nightfall.
It is crucial that you also bring some sun-block lotion so you can protect yourself from the harmful UV rays of the sun.
Diving is divine during this time of the year. Water temperature has an average of 22°C or 72°F, which still requires you to wear a full suit but without the hood.
The underwater world has a clear visibility, making it ideal to watch the exotic fish and other endangered species that can only be found in the Gulf of Aqaba, which is a part of the Red Sea.
The country's Independence Day also takes place during May causing a lot of celebrations in the city to mark the Treaty of 1946. This holiday event is usually merged with the Arab Renaissance Day, a major event which celebrates the new, modern Jordan.
Hakaya's Festival will be held in May as well. This festival consists of highly artistic locals who celebrate the beautiful art of storytelling. Film screenings, workshops and other fun-filled activities are available for tourists, making this month exciting and enjoyable.
