Beach in Amadores for February
Maspalomas Beach
Everyone has heard of Maspalomas, mainly because of the famous sand dunes that are located here. Of course, you have to visit the dunes, but the beach itself is great for a spot of fun in the sun. It's always good to get away from the resort you're actually based in sometimes, to truly explore the area, and Maspalomas is only just under a 20 minutes' drive away.
The beach at Maspalomas is made of fine white sand, with brilliant blue sea lapping the shore. There are four areas to this particular stretch of sand, with the first section the main part for visitors, especially families, and the other parts being either nudist beaches, or popular with the gay community. Surrounding the beach are plentiful bars and restaurants, and there are water-sports to enjoy, such as jet-skiing, or pedalos for hire.
Bars and Restaurants
Tiffany's Bar
If you want a home away from home feel to your evening's entertainment then head to Tiffany's Bar, where you will find cheap drinks, music, fun, and a laid-back atmosphere. Again, this is heading towards the Puerto Rico part of town, which is only 10 minutes away in a taxi or by bus.
Happy Valley Indian Restaurant
If you prefer to stay in Amadores itself, then Happy Valley Indian Restaurant will certainly cater for your curry needs, consistently voted one of the best in town. The location is very central too, so you don't have too far to stumble once you've eaten.
Silver Sand
Alternatively, Silver Sand is a very popular choice, right on the beach-front. The sunsets here are amazing, and the food is just as good, with large portions, and value for money to boot.
Things to do in Amadores in February
Blue Explorer's Dive Centre
Despite the fact it is February, and that generally means cold weather in many parts of the world, in Amadores this isn't the case. The warm waters around Gran Canaria throughout the year make this the perfect spot for snorkelling, even if you're not that experienced. You can grab a snorkel and simply head to the beach in Amadores to spot some underwater residents, especially early in the morning, but if you want something a little deeper and more extreme then jump on a trip to Taurito where you will find Blue Explorer's Dive Centre. Here you can see seahorses, turtles, colourful fish, and coral gardens, all with instruction from helpful and knowledgeable guides.
Head to Puerto de Mogan
The great thing about Amadores is that it makes for the perfect base, and with a beautiful beach to enjoy, you might wonder why you should bother going anywhere else; that is a mistake however. The surrounding area is beautiful, and next door you will find Puerto de Mogan, about 20 minutes' drive. This resort is known as the Venice of the Canaries, because of the waterways which cross the resort underneath various bridges, and the slightly more upmarket feel. This is a beautiful place to visit, with a picturesque marina for an evening stroll, and a pretty fishing harbour. If you want to haggle on the market, then head to Puerto de Mogan on a Friday.
Festival of the Almond in Blossom
February is also the start of two large festivals on Gran Canaria, and the main one being Fiesta del Almendro en Flor, aka the Festival of the Almond in Blossom. This festival happens during the early month, when the almond trees around the island begin to blossom. You will be able to sample local produce made with almonds, including delicious almond wine, as well as catching some traditional folk dancing and various entertainment.
Carnival Around the Island
As well as this, head to Maspalomas for the Carnival Around the Island. Each area which celebrates this festival has a slight difference, but generally you will find dancing, parades, singing, and a bright, happy atmosphere in the February sun.
