For an alternative to the city beaches, head to Mojacar beach on the eastern coast of the region. The village is picturesque and worth a visit in itself, but for beach days, the Mojacar playa extends 17kms, and has beautiful blue waters, with some beaches along this stretch earning European blue flag awards for cleanliness.

For sports enthusiasts, there are many activities such as jet skiing, windsurfing, sailing and canoeing, while the golf course offers spectacular views of the area. There are many bars, cafes and restaurants around the area, with daytime relaxing turning into night-time partying as the sun goes down.

Bars and Restaurants

For something a little unusual, try the La Gruta restaurant. Located on the coast, 4km from Almeria city centre, this restaurant is set in carved out caves in a former quarry overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. This setting provides cosy and tranquil ambience with a spectacular wine cellar that holds 30,000 bottles. The food is Mediterranean and local cuisine, the service is fast and friendly and the setting makes it an ideal dining experience for couples.

Head to Kuki bar on the beach at Mojacar, Almeria for relaxing drinks in a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. This family owned bar serves food and drinks and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is the perfect spot for late night drinks with friends after a day at the beach on the hot August days.

If visiting San Juan de los Terreros beach in August, go to Abanicos bar for evening drinks. This oasis set amongst tropical vegetation and surrounded by birds and water, this cocktail bar is the perfect place to relax after a day in the sun. Meet the resident parrot, enjoy an alcoholic or non-alcoholic cocktail and experience the ambient surroundings of this tropical paradise.

Things to do in Almeria in August

August is the month that Almeria celebrates its patrons saint with a ten-day festival La Virgen del Mar. This festival includes a midday fiesta in the town square with local cuisine, dance, music and a fairground, equestrian activities and bullfights. For a taste of local culture, this is not to be missed.

A good way to see more of the resort is by boat. Try a boat tour with a company such as El Cabo a Fondo, offering boat trips in the Cabo de Gata natural park. See birds and other wildlife, view the magnificent cliffs from the sea and volcanic sand beaches. Suitable for the whole family, this is an excellent alternative to the beach on a hot August day.
