September in Akumal brings not only traditional showers and thunderstorms, but also the threat of hurricane development. The tenth day of the month is traditionally the meteorological height of hurricane season as there is a good chance of storms developing during this time of the year. Additionally, one of the hotspots for tropical storm development is just off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula before traveling through the Yucatan Channel and into the Gulf of Mexico. As a result, some visitors may choose to take a holiday during a different time of the year. However, if you do visit during this month, you can expect much smaller crowds.
Even without tropical storm development, this is the wettest month of the year with an impressive 220mm of precipitation falling over a period of 15 days. That results in half of the month receiving measurable rainfall. With air temperatures remaining warm, many thunderstorms develop during the later afternoon hours when average highs reach 31°C (88°F).
Despite the rain and the beginning of autumn, temperatures remain warm and average 28°C (82°F) throughout the day. The average overnight low is also a very warm 24°C (75°F). Thanks to the tropical nature of the region, temperatures will not swing wildly from the morning to the afternoon when highs reach an average temperature of 31°C (88°F). Thanks to the heat and the humidity, visitors need to be sure to drink plenty of fluids in order to remain hydrated.
Water temperatures are also warm if visitors can find a dry period to enjoy the areas beaches. Despite the change in seasons, water temperatures remain very consistent with an average of 29°C (84°F). Even with the rain, the region continues to experience an average of 6 hours of sunshine per day. This is down slightly from August, but still allows enough time to be outdoors.
